LEWISTON, Idaho – The hits just kept coming for the sixth-ranked Lewis-Clark State Baseball team in its 18-4 victory over College of Idaho. Among the Warriors' 13 hits were a pair of grand slams, with one each by
Riley Way and
Zach Threlfall. The feat is the first of its kind for LC State since 2015.
Eric Chavarria put together a strong six innings for the Warriors on the mound in his start. He earned his fifth victory of the season after striking out seven and not walking a batter.
"Eric continues to improve with each outing and gave us six solid innings that allowed our offense to do its thing," Head Coach
Jake Taylor said. "They obviously helped us with free passes and a few miscues early, but we put some good swings on balls today. We will look to finish the series strong tomorrow."
The Yotes had a hot start with a leadoff home run by Jonah Hultberg. LC State responded with a pair in the home half of the inning to take the lead.
Jack Johnson got his day started with a single up the middle, and
Dillon Plew walked to put two on. An errant throw on a ball hit by
Aidan Nagle brought in both to make it 2-1 Warriors.
LC State put up another three runs in the bottom of the second. A wild throw put
Matt James on first, and
Alex Light took over on the bases for the catcher. He scored on a double by
A.J. Davis after stealing second, and Davis took third on a double by Way. A base hit by Johnson, the third straight hit of the inning, plated a run to grow the advantage to 5-1.
Chavarria picked up a pair of punchouts in both the top of the fourth and the fifth before the Warriors put up a crooked number in the LC half of the fifth. Nagle singled through the left side and
Luke White was hit by a pitch to put two on. An RBI base hit by James brought in a run before back-to-back hit-by-pitches loaded the bases. Davis wore a pitch to bring in another.
Way stepped to the plate next and sent a line drive just over the fence in the left field corner for his first-career grand slam. The junior rounded the bases and gave the Warriors an 11-0 lead.
"It was awesome," Way said of the grand slam, "especially since it's been a little while since I've hit one out. That feeling of the ball coming off the bat and knowing it has a chance is a great feeling."
The offensive onslaught continued with a seven spot in the seventh. C of I tacked one two in the top of the inning before the Warriors hit their second grand slam of the game.
Davis and Johnson were each hit by a pitch, adding to the growing total I the game, and a single by Way had the bases loaded. Plew brought in a run with a sacrifice fly before a single by
Brock Ephan loaded the bases again. Nagle continued his tear with a two-bagger to left to bring two runs in, and
Zach Needham became the seventh Warrior to be hit by a pitch in his plate appearance of the day.
Zach Threlfall etched his and Way's names in the LC record books with the second grand slam of the game. The duo is the first since Cabe Reiten and
Ty Jackson in 2015 to hit a grand slam in the same game.
By the end of the seventh, LC State led C of I 18-3.
The Yotes tacked on a run in the top of the ninth before
Eli Shubert closed out the game with the Warriors in front 18-4. Light ended the game with an incredible diving grab in center, flying through the air in super hero fashion.
Way and Johnson each notched three hits, while Way and Threfall each drove in four. Nagle picked up three RBI in his two-hit day.
Chavarria allowed one run in his outing. He struck out seven and earned the win.
Lucas Gregory struck out two in his inning of relief, and Shubert fanned two in his two innings.
