KIRKLAND, Wash. – A sharp-shooting Northwest University team proved too much for LC State Men's Basketball on Saturday on the road as the Warriors fell by a final of 78-63. The Eagles controlled the contest early on and carried the momentum throughout the night.
"Northwest really had us on our heels both defensively and offensively," Head Coach
Austin Johnson said. "All credit to them. We are struggling in some key facets of the game right now, but I'm confident in the character of our guys that we'll find a way to keep improving and sticking together."
Brennen Newsom got the scoring started 40 seconds after the tip.
Silas Bennion kept things close with an and-one play two minutes later before Northwest took an 8-5 lead. NU jumped ahead 14-9, by a basket by Newsom and 3-pointer from
Al Sommerfield tied things up at 14 each by 13:49.
A pair of 3s by the Eagles swung the momentum back to Northwest as the deficit grew to 24-16 midway through the half. Back-to-back triples by
Khalil Stevenson and Sommerfield brought the Warriors within three, 27-24, at 7:46, and another 3 by Stevenson kept LC in striking distance.
Sommerfield hit his third 3 of the half at the 5:14 mark to make it a two-point game, but NU surged ahead for a 40-32 advantage with three minutes to go in the half. By the end of the first 20 minutes, Northwest led 48-34.
LC chipped away in the second half with the help of a 3 by Sommerfield. Newsom put back an offensive rebound and a layup by Bennion cut the deficit to five at 10:53, but Northwest continued to excel offensively.
Northwest took the contest 78-63 behind a .508 shooting percentage from the field and 11 3-pointers.
Courtney led the Warriors with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Sommerfield also scored 14 points. Newsom grabbed 10 boards, Stevenson had 13 points and Bennion added 10 with seven assists and two steals.
