British Columbia Fends Off Late LC State Rally to Edge Warriors

LEWISTON, Idaho – LC State rallied in the bottom of the ninth but came up just short against (RV) British Columbia on Friday night. The Warriors put up seven runs in the final three innings but fell 8-7.

The loss has the LC State record at 26-4 on the season and 18-4 in Cascade Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game sat scoreless after the first three innings before British Columbia struck for the first run of the contest in the top of the fourth. UBC added on to grow the margin to 6-0 through six innings.

LC State answered with a four-run bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to two runs. Izzy Madariaga and Sam Weber led off the inning with back-to-back singles and a wild pitch put both in scoring position. The Warriors did their damage with two outs after a pitching change shifted the momentum.

Payton Smith singled to plate the pair and free passes to Brandon Nguyen and Jackson Jaha loaded the bases. Noah Weintraub sent a base hit up the middle to bring the score to 6-4.

The Thunderbirds capitalized on a leadoff walk in the eighth with a two-run homer to stretch the difference back to 8-4.

LC State neared a comeback in the bottom of the ninth but fell just short. Smith, Nguyen, Bryce Johnson and Madariaga all walked to bring in a run. Weber doubled to left to bring in two to make it a one-run game, but that is as close as the Warriors got.

STAT RECAP
Weintraub and Weber each had two hits and two RBI in the contest.

Canfield took the loss after five innings of work with two runs allowed. Zach Elsos gave up four runs, two earned, in an inning and Levi Anderson allowed two in his frame. Joey Estrada threw the final two frames and struck out three without allowing a run.

UBC's Will Anderson struck out 11 batters in 6.2 innings with two runs allowed. Josh Cote led the Thunderbirds with a 3-for-5 night at the plate with five RBI.
