KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – It came down to the last few holes, but No. 20 LC State Men's Golf finished just short of an upset victory over No. 15 British Columbia on Tuesday at the Oregon Tech Fall Invitational, played at the Running Y Ranch Resort. The Warriors finished second overall with the best 54-hole performance in program history and third-best total in the Cascade Conference record book.
LC State finished 29-under, 835, as a team while UBC set the CCC record with its 30-under, 831 total. All four scoring players for the Warriors finished in the top 10, led by
Lucas Ortega in second place.
"It was a true battle out there today," coach
Zach Anderson said. "We got into a shootout and came out on the wrong end of it but I'm proud of the way the guys fought. Not much you can be upset about shooting 29-under. Despite the loss, breaking the school scoring record for 54 holes is an amazing accomplishment. All five guys contributed to the scoring. Excited for what's to come with this team."
Ortega tied for the best round in the tournament with a 6-under, 66, on Tuesday. The score, aided by an eagle on hole 8, moved him into second place by two strokes over teammate
Andrea Artusini who placed third. Artusini finished 10-under after a round of 2-under in his final 18 holes. He carded five birdies on the day.
Senior
Luke West made a big jump on Tuesday with a 4-under-par round to move him up 12 spots to a tie for sixth. He fired off eight birdies to finish the tournament 2-under-par.
Freshman
Archie Jones rounded out the scoring group and was even-par in his first collegiate tournament. After some challenges in his round, Jones tied for eighth to secure a spot in the top 10.
Hunter Millsap was just outside the top 10 with one of the best outings of his career. The senior was 2-under on the day to move up 10 spots to a tie for 11
th place overall at 1-over.
