Student-Athlete Insurance Requirements

  • Every student-athlete is required to have primary insurance coverage. That insurance must work in the local area and covers athletic-related injuries/illnesses
  • Failure to follow insurance requirements will result in the voiding of athletic department secondary insurance and will jeopardize participation in practice and games.
  • There is an athletic department secondary insurance; however, it is only for LC State athletic-related injury and cannot work as a primary insurance.
  • Voluntary workouts will not be covered by the school's secondary policy. This includes voluntary summer, voluntary out-of-season workouts, personal trainers, summer leagues or summer travel teams.

All student-athletes fall into category A, B or C.  Please read the section that applies to you

B. Domestic in-state student-athletes (Idaho residents)

BEFORE COMING TO SCHOOL:

1.         Your personal insurance must meet these criteria:

  • Pay benefits for athletic injuries/illnesses, including dental.
  • Pay the first $5,000 of reasonable and customary charges.
  • Pay benefits in one or more of these zip codes: 83501, 99403, 83843, 99164 or 99163

Required for Parents and Student-Athletes: For Idaho residents, you will need to contact your insurance company and provide it with the information that your son/daughter is attending college in Lewiston, Idaho, so benefits are clearly understood.

If your insurance does not provide coverage in this area, you can do one of two things:

1.        Use the move to Lewiston as a "qualifying event" and change the policy without changing carriers, or

2.       Purchase a policy that will meet the above requirements.  The link to purchase other insurance is https://www.yourhealthidaho.org/. Please be aware: You likely will need to purchase a temporary plan until the open enrollment period in November/December allows you to purchase full-time coverage. Please verify before purchase that any policy covers intercollegiate athletics.

*Kaiser Permanente will not work in Lewiston. Please call (208) 792-2000 for further information.

C. Domestic out-of-state student-athletes (Residents of a US state other than Idaho)

*State Medicaid policies do not transfer to another state, you will need to purchase other insurance.*

Required for Parents and Student-Athletes:  You will need to contact your insurance company and provide them with the information that your son/daughter is attending college in Lewiston, Idaho, so benefits are clearly understood. If your primary insurance does not meet the above criteria, and/or only covers emergency care, you will need to purchase another policy.

Here is a link to a low-cost temporary policy that will cover intercollegiate athletic injuries.  You can purchase an accident rider for a small amount that reduces the deductible.  If you have questions related to this policy please contact Andrew Allen at Dissinger Reed, Toll-Free: (800) 386-9183 or aallen@dissingerreed.com, or Diann Williams at diann.williams@hubinternational.com.

Please note:

  • New federal legislation only allows short-term medical insurance plans for a maximum of 3 months with a 1-month extension, which means additional insurance will have to be purchased during the school year, if purchased later than Sept. 1, 2024. Policies purchased by Aug. 30, 2024 can go for 364 days.
  • Use Idaho address to enroll and use student email if possible.
  • Choose Pivot Health Epic Base, it is the only option in Idaho for a total of 180 days.
  • Choose the $5,000 accident rider (it will give you a $0 deductible for all sports injuries and no out-of-pocket expenses for sports care in conjunction with your secondary).
