Nominees announced for fifth annual WAA High School Awards

LEWISTON, Idaho – Officials from Lewis-Clark State College announced the nominees for the fifth annual Warrior Athletics Association High School Awards on Monday.

Twenty-two area high schools in southeastern Washington and north central Idaho are participating in the event this year. The athletic directors and principals at each high school submitted their school's nomination for Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and the Meritorious Award. The complete list of nominees is shown in the table below.

All of the nominees will be honored on Oct. 12 at the WAA High School Awards Dinner. At this event one individual from each category will be announced as the overall winner. The awards banquet will be held at the Lewis-Clark State College Activity Center starting at 7 p.m. Doors open and a meet-and-greet social will begin at 6 p.m.

Tickets for the banquet are $25 per person and can be purchased from the LCSC Athletic Ticket Office, located upstairs in the Activity Center. Tickets also can be purchased with a credit card by calling (208) 792-2471.

Established in 2007, the WAA High School Awards program was started by the Warrior Athletic Association as a means to bring area high schools and communities together by congratulating and encouraging regional high school athletes, teams, coaches, and volunteers on their efforts and accomplishments. The program places a special amount of emphasis on the Meritorious Award, a category which has helped highlight and thank a number of unsung high school volunteers and supporters.

High schools ranging from as far west as Pomeroy, north as Deary, and east as Kooskia submitted their nominations based on no set criteria. From these nominees, finalists and the overall winners will be chosen by officials from Lewis-Clark State College, the Warrior Athletic Association, and area high school sports enthusiasts.

Last year, Colton High School's Kelsey Moser, Prairie's Kyler Shumway and boys basketball team, Lewiston's Pat Teichmer, and Kamiah's Bob Olive were named the overall winners.

In 2009, Lapwai High School's Chelsey Leighton, Genesee's Beau Dahmen, Prairie's football team, Lewiston's Dave Cornelia, and Pomeroy's John Gates claimed the top spots.

Major sponsors of the event include Lewis & Clark Orthopaedic Institute, Kendall Chevrolet, and Pepsi. For more information about the event visit www.lcsc.edu/athletics/WAA/hs-awards
