Nominees announced for seventh annual WAA High School Awards

LEWISTON, Idaho – Officials from Lewis-Clark State College announced the nominees for the seventh annual Warrior Athletics Association High School Awards on Tuesday.

Twenty-two area high schools in southeastern Washington and north central Idaho are participating in the event this year. The athletic directors and principals at each high school submitted their school's nomination for Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and the Meritorious Award. The complete list of nominees is below.

All of the nominees will be honored on Oct. 16 at the WAA High School Awards Banquet. At the event finalists will be named and one nominee from each category will be announced as the overall winner. The awards banquet will be held at the LCSC Activity Center starting at 6:30 p.m., with a no-host social beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for the banquet are $25 apiece and can be purchased from the Warrior athletic department, on the first floor of the Activity Center. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone via credit card by calling 208-792-2275.

Again this year, a discounted ticket price is available for nominated teams which purchase tickets and attend the event as a group. For details contact the athletic department.

Established in 2007, the WAA High School Awards program was started by the Warrior Athletic Association as a means to honor regional high school athletes, teams, coaches, and volunteers on their efforts and accomplishments. The program places a special amount of emphasis on the Meritorious Award, a category which has helped highlight and thank a number of unsung high school volunteers and supporters.

High schools ranging from as far west as Pomeroy, Wash. north as Deary, Idaho and east as Kooskia, Idaho submitted their nominations based on no set criteria. From these nominees, finalists and the overall winners will be chosen by a committee composed of officials from Lewis-Clark State College and the Warrior Athletic Association, local media members, and area high school sports enthusiasts.

Last year, Clarkston High School's Jamie Weisner (female) and girls basketball team, Grangeville's Justin Robie (male), Lewiston's Pat Teichmer (coach), and Kamiah's Kim and Keith Jacobs (meritorious) were named the overall winners.

Major sponsors of the event are Lewis & Clark Orthopaedic Institute, Kendall Chevrolet, the Pepsi Bottling Company of Lewiston, and Potlatch No. 1 Federal Credit Union.
