Nominees named for eighth annual WAA High School Awards

LEWISTON, Idaho – Officials from Lewis-Clark State College announced the nominees for the eighth annual Warrior Athletic Association High School Awards on Thursday.

A record 23 area high schools are participating in this year's event, which will recognize accomplishments from the 2013-14 academic year. The athletic directors at each high school submitted their school's nomination for Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and the Meritorious Award. The complete list of nominees is below.

All nominees will be honored on Oct. 15 at the WAA High School Awards Banquet. At the event, finalists will be named and one nominee from each category will be announced as the overall winner. The awards banquet will be held at the LCSC Activity Center starting at 6:30 p.m., with a no-host social beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for the banquet are $25 apiece and can be purchased from the Warrior athletic department, on the first floor of the Activity Center. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone via credit card by calling 208-792-2275. More information is available at the event website: www.lcwarriors.com/hsa

All nominees receive a complimentary ticket, and nominated teams receive two complimentary tickets. Also, for the second straight year a discounted ticket price is available for nominated teams which purchase tickets and attend the event as a group. For details contact the athletic department.

Established in 2007, the WAA High School Awards program was started by the Warrior Athletic Association as a means to honor regional high school athletes, teams, coaches, and volunteers on their efforts and accomplishments. The program places a special amount of emphasis on the Meritorious Award, a category which has helped highlight and thank a number of unsung high school volunteers and supporters.

High schools ranging from as far west as Pomeroy, Wash. north as Deary, Idaho and east as Kooskia, Idaho submitted their nominations based on no set criteria. From these nominees, finalists and the overall winners will be chosen by a committee composed of officials from Lewis-Clark State College and the Warrior Athletic Association, local media members, and area high school sports enthusiasts.

Last year, Colton High School's Kaitlin Druffel (female), Kamiah's Kevin Hill (male), Lewiston's volleyball team, Grangeville's Walter "Skip" Hall (coach), and Culdesac's Marge Munsterman (meritorious) were named the overall winners.

Major sponsors of the event are Lewis & Clark Orthopaedic Institute, Kendall Chevrolet, the Pepsi Bottling Company of Lewiston, P1FCU, and Inland Cellular.
