ANTELOPE VALLEY, Calif. – Four players scored in double figures as the Lewis-Clark State women's basketball team raced past Cal Maritime, 103-45, at the Antelope Valley Classic Saturday night.
It was a night of positives for the Warriors (2-0), who were led by freshman
Delaney Henery's 21 points. Senior
Lauren Johnson had 17, and junior
Jossilyn Blackman and freshman
Peyton Souvenir had 12 each. Henery, who was recovering from an injury and was cleared to play just two days before LC left for the two-day California swing, connected on seven-of-10 field goal attempts and was five-of-five from the free throw line.
"She's so tough, so strong," coach
Brian Orr said. "She had a great game."
Accolades were easy to pass out given that all 12 players scored, they shot 50.7 percent from the field, dominated the boards 44-31, and netted 24 steals while forcing a combined 34 turnovers.
"Everyone contributed in a real positive way," Orr said. "I thought we really defended well tonight – especially in the second half. We played the passing lanes really well. We pressured the basketball.
"We wanted our defense to create our offense tonight."
The Warriors scored 39 of their points off of turnovers, and the bench players totaled 58 of the 103.
LCSC opened with a 23-12 first-quarter lead and expanded that margin to 57-24 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Warriors were up by 50 – 84-34.
Every player played at least nine minutes and only two played more than 22 as Orr was able to see how his young team responded in game action. Half of his roster is comprised of players in their first season of collegiate basketball and they combined for 49 points Saturday night.
