Box Score 2 LEWISTON, Idaho – The LCSC baseball team won Game 1 of the doubleheader against British Columbia 3-1, but let a 10-run lead slip away in Game 2, falling 20-14 to split the DH against the Thunderbirds.
The 10-run lost-lead was the largest in history, breaking the previous record of eight runs back in 1988 and 81. The 20 runs allowed are the most allowed by an LC team in a nine-inning game. Old record, 19, was a lost to UNLV at Las Vegas 19-9 in 1980.
The Warriors now have a record of 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the NAIA West. The Thunderbirds improved to 12-4 on the season and 2-1 conference slate.
UBC got on the board first in the third inning with a solo homer.
Matt Thompson's sac fly in the bottom of the inning brought home
Raymond Pedrina to knot the game at 1-1.
The Warriors grabbed the lead in the fourth for good with a
DePaul Blunt bases-loaded walk, scoring
Brock Ephan.
Mason Verge ended the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single.
LCSC starter
Connor Brogdon shut down the bats of UBC tossing 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts and an earned run.
Anthony Balderas pitched two innings of relief for his first save of the season. The Warriors scattered five hits by five batters.
Gunnar Buhner powered the LCSC offense in the early going in the second game. Buhner hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first and a 2-run shot in the second to give the Warriors a 6-1 lead after two innings. LCSC added three runs in the third and 2 in the fourth to take their 11-1 lead to the fifth inning.
Seeming in full control, the Thunderbirds thought something else. UBC scored nine runs on seven hits in the top of the 5th to cut the large deficit to one. Buhner added an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to push the lead to two, going 3-3 in his first three at bats with two homers and six RBI.
The Thunderbirds countered their 9-run fifth inning with a 6-run sixth inning to take the lead, 16-14, which ended all scoring of the night.
Buhner finished the night going 4-6 with 6 RBI and three runs. Pedrina was 4-4 with four runs and 3 RBI.
The Warriors will host UBC in one last game on Sunday in the series. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
