Box Score LEWISTON, Idaho. – Despite giving up 15 hits to Corban University, four Lewis-Clark State College pitchers combined to allow only one run to help LCSC to an 8-1 win in the first game of an NAIA West doubleheader at Harris Field on Sunday afternoon.
The second contest was stopped in the third inning because of rain. The game will be picked up where it left off with LCSC leading 4-0 when LCSC visits Salem, Ore., to face Corban in another four-game series on April 28-30.
LCSC, which took two of three games in this series, is now 8-4 in league play and 17-9 overall, while Corban falls to 4-11 and 10-18.
In Sunday's opener matching teams with the same nickname, LCSC nearly set a program record for most hits allowed in a shutout win. Corban entered the ninth inning with 13 hits but without a run. Corban finally scored its lone run in the ninth on two singles and two hit batters.
LCSC senior right-hander
Kevin Hamann improved to 4-0 on the season. He allowed 10 hits in six innings of work with three strikeouts.
Daulton Blackwell,
Matt Gorgolinski, and Christian Jarnagan each pitched an inning. LCSC pitchers did not allow a walk in the game and were aided by four double plays by the defense, including the final two outs of the game with the bases loaded.
LCSC broke on top 2-0 in the third inning when
Cooper Goldby started the rally with a single and scored on
Raymond Pedrina's two-run home run to left field. It was his fourth of the season.
LCSC then added four in the fourth for a 6-0 lead.
Micah Brown walked, was sacrificed to second by
Logan Griffin, and scored on a single by
Gunnar Buhner.
Marten Pauwels, who hit a home run on Saturday for his first hit of the season, followed with another home run, this one to center field. Goldby walked and Pedrina and
Seaver Whalen followed with singles, the latter driving in the final run of the inning.
LCSC scored its final two runs in the eighth when Buhner singled with two outs and scored on a double to center by Pauwels. Goldby then singled in Pauwels.
Buhner, Pauwels, and Goldby, the Nos. 7-9 hitters for LCSC on Sunday, combined to go 6-of-11 with five RBI and six runs scored. Pauwels was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Buhner was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Goldby was 2-for-3 with an RBI and his spot in the lineup accounted for two runs scored.
Pedrina finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Benjamin Liogon was 4-for-4 to pace Corban, which left 13 baserunners stranded.
Corban starter Thomas Kerr took the loss to fall to 1-3. He allowed four hits, five walks, and six runs in 3.1 innings of work.
LCSC returns to action on Friday when it travels to Vancouver, British Columbia, to face the University of British Columbia. Friday's game is set for 1 p.m.
LCSC's next home game will be April 14 vs. Saint Katherine College at 5 p.m. at Harris Field. The Warriors will play a four-game series against the St. Katherine's, which is located in San Marco, Calif.
