Fish's three-hit shutout helps LC sweep UBC

| Box Score 2 VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Senior left-hander Matt Fish threw a three-hit shutout in the opener and the Lewis-Clark State College pitching staff limited the University of British Columbia to two runs in the second game to sweep an NAIA West Conference North Division doubleheader 3-0 and 7-2 on Saturday.

The sweep ended a three-game losing streak to the Thunderbirds, who swept a doubleheader from the Warriors on Friday. The fifth and final game of the series will be played on Sunday at 11 a.m.

LCSC, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, improved to 19-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play, while UBC is 21-10 and 11-7.

Fish became the first Warrior pitcher this season to throw a complete game shutout and it marked only the second time an LCSC pitcher had accomplished the feat against the Thunderbirds. The first was by Michael Guerrero, who threw a four-hitter in an 11-0 win in Lewiston in 2008.

Fish, 3-1 overall, had his best control of the season as he did not allow a walk and struck out four. He had a no-hitter going until Nick Spillman singled with two outs in the fifth. Austen Butler's two-out triple in the ninth marked the only baserunner to reach third for UBC in the game.

LCSC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Raymond Pedrina doubled to right and went to third on a single by Evan Douglas. Seaver Whalen followed with a single through the left side to score Pedrina. The Warriors proceeded to load the bases with no outs, but couldn't get another run in.

The Warriors made it 2-0 in the fourth when Gunnar Buhner had a one-out single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Cooper Goldby then collected an RBI single to left.

LCSC's final run came in the eighth when Whalen walked and eventually scored on a single by Micah Brown.

Whalen wound up with two of LCSC's eight hits in the game as he went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

In the second game, the Warriors used three pitchers, who yielded a total of 11 hits, but they managed to pitch out of jams as UBC left 14 base runners stranded. Starter Gage Burland lasted only two innings and gave up four hits and two runs. David Wilson, now 3-2 on the season, went four innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts. Henry McAree picked up his fourth save as he went the final three innings and allowed six hits with two strikeouts. Three of the hits came in the ninth when UBC loaded the bases with one out, but McAree got a strike out and a ground out to end the game.

The Warriors scored four times on five hits in the second inning. J.J. Robinson singled to start the frame and scored on a double by Brown. Matt Thompson's RBI single scored Brown and Thompson scored on a double by Buhner. Pedrina doubled to score Buhner.

UBC picked up its two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Vinny Martin, but the Warriors countered with two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 6-2. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out and Robinson scored two with a double down the right-field line.

The Warriors picked up their final run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly RBI by Buhner.

Robinson and Buhner finished with two RBI apiece for LCSC, while Pedrina, Thompson and Robinson had two hits apiece.

Whalen had a hit in the second game to stretch his consecutive-game hit streak to 20, which ties for 11th on LCSC's all-time list. Justin Fuller holds the record at 30, which he accomplished during the 2004 season.

The top three teams in the NAIA West North Division standings advance to a three-team double-elimination playoff after the regular season. The regular-season champion will serve as the playoff host, but because LCSC hosts the Avista NAIA World Series, it can't host the playoffs. If the season ended today, UBC would be the host with LCSC and Oregon Tech as the other two teams.
