Warriors break out new uniforms and win 25-2

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State College baseball team broke out a new uniform on Easter Sunday, and then proceeded not to leave any eggs, candy or anything else for Saint Katherine.

Scoring at least two runs in all but two of the innings it batted in, the Warriors rolled past the San Marcos, Calif., school 25-2 at LCSC's Harris Field on Sunday.

The Warriors, 27-12 overall, stretched their win streak to eight games by producing a season-high in runs. The 25 runs tied for ninth all-time in program history and the most scored ever under fifth-year coach Jeremiah Robbins, who had never used anything but the blue tops and gray pants as LCSC's uniform prior to Sunday.

But the with NAIA pushing for home and away uniforms during the Avista NAIA World Series, the Warriors broke out an all-white look and proceeded to whitewash their visitors. Saint Katherine, 18-24, simply ran out of pitching during the game and the last two of the 11 pitchers used were actually position players seeing their first action on the mound this season.

The 11 pitchers used by an opponent is the most ever used in a game against the Warriors.

LCSC batters responded with 16 hits on the day and also took advantage of 16 walks and five hit batters.

The 25 runs were the most LCSC scored since it had 22 last year in a 22-2 win over Simpson. The program record is 36 in a 36-6 win against Southern Utah in 1997. However, LCSC had not scored 25 or more runs in a game since 2002.

"A long one," LCSC outfielder Logan Griffin replied smiling when asked about his thoughts on the game. "But it's definitely nice to end up with the sweep on a long weekend."

Griffin and J.J. Robinson each drove in five runs Sunday, but it was Griffin's three run blast in the bottom of the third that broke open the contest. He also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to finish 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and the five RBI before being replaced in the late innings.

"It's nice to see the team start coming together like it has the past couple of weeks," Griffin said. "I'd say it's because of better focus. We have had two good weeks of practice and we're getting better."

Robinson, who had a huge four-game series against Saint Katherine, finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored. He put LCSC ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single and then had two-run doubles in both the seventh and eighth innings.

For the series, Robinson was 7-of-18 at the plate with seven runs scored and 13 RBI.

Saint Katherine actually led 2-0 in the top of the first when it got to LCSC starter Rian Bassett, but after picking up three hits in the first, the Firebirds managed only four more the rest of the way. Bassett went four innings and allowed three hits, four walks, and two runs. He struck out four. Henry McAree, who got the win to improve to 2-0 on the season, allowed one hit over three innings with four strikeouts, while David Wilson and Daulton Blackwell each added an inning.

After the Firebirds put up their two runs, Gunnar Buhner tied it with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning.

Robinson's RBI single and a three-run blast by Griffin, his fourth of the year, made it 6-2 in the third.

LCSC added two more in the fourth on only one hit. Three walks and a hit batter aided the rally as Griffin's sacrifice fly brought in the first run and a bases-loaded walk to Emilio Alcantar made it 8-2.

The Warriors added three runs in the fifth but without a base hit. Five walks, including bases-loaded walks to Buhner and Griffin, along with a sacrifice fly by Brock Ephan made it 11-0.

LCSC then used an eight-run seventh inning and six more in the eighth for the lopsided win. In the seventh, Ephan and Robinson had two-run doubles, while Raymond Pedrina added a two-run single. Cooper Goldby hit an RBI single, while a wild pitch accounted for the other run.

In the eighth, Robinson and Depaul Blunt had two-run doubles, while Mason Verge added an RBI double and Chase Hafer had an RBI single.

Ephan finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Buhner was 1-for-3 with three RBI. Pedrina finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.

LCSC will resume NAIA West Conference play on Friday when it begins at four-game series at home against the College of Idaho. Friday's contest will begin at 6:15 p.m., following a special dedication of the naming of Ed Cheff Stadium. Cheff, the legendary LCSC baseball coach who won 16 national titles, is scheduled to be there along with several former players and coaches. The dedication ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.

LCSC is currently tied with British Columbia for first place in the conference standings at 14-7. The conference champion will play host to the three-team conference playoffs on May 5-7, but because LCSC is the host of the Avista NAIA World Series, it can't serve as the host of the conference tournament. That means the tournament is all but assured of being played in Vancouver, B.C. as the third place team in the standings, College of Idaho, is 12-11, and three games behind UBC. Oregon Tech is also in the hunt for the third spot, but it 11-15 in league play after being swept by College of Idaho on Sunday.

LCSC's four-game series against the College of Idaho, which includes a 10 a.m. doubleheader next Saturday and then a single game on Sunday at noon, marks the last scheduled home games for the Warriors before the Series on May 26-June 2.
