Ephan helps LCSC hits milestones with doubleheader sweep of Yotes

LEWISTON, Idaho – Brock Ephan hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in seven runs as the Lewis-Clark State College baseball program celebrated a couple of milestones with a NAIA West Conference doubleheader sweep over the College of Idaho 13-3 and 12-1 in games that were stopped after seven innings because of the 10-run rule at Ed Cheff Stadium's Harris Field on a warm Saturday afternoon.

Ephan, who has now homered in three straight games, drove in three runs in the opener and four in the second game to help LCSC stretch its win streak to 11 games and stand 30-12 overall and 17-7 in conference play. College of Idaho falls to 19-24 overall and 12-14 in conference play.

The first game on Saturday was the LCSC baseball program's 3,000th game since baseball was officially recognized as a sport at the college in 1962. The 25 total runs on Saturday also pushed the program's total runs scored to more than 25,000 at 25,003.

The Warriors, who play College of Idaho in a single nine-inning game on Sunday at noon, have outscored the Yotes 38-7 in the three games thus far.

"It's always great to sweep a league doubleheader," said Ephan, who now tied for third on the team with five home runs.

Ephan, who has driven in 10 runs in the series, has had a little bit of extra incentive this week as his parents are in town from Hawaii. His dad, Larry, played on the LCSC 1992 NAIA national championship baseball team that was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame on Saturday night.

"It's always great to have them at the games and here in Lewiston," Brock said with a smile. "But I've been feeling good lately. I made a couple of adjustments at the plate and it's helped."

J.J. Robinson, who also has three home runs in the series to lift his total to a team-leading 16, drove in four runs on the day as did Seaver Whalen.

"It feels like we've all bought into the program and all of that work is starting to pay off," Ephan said about the Warriors' play of late.

In the opener, the Warriors got to College of Idaho starter Zach Draper for 12 hits and nine runs in five innings. That was quite a contrast from Draper's last outing when he threw a one-hit shutout in a win over Oregon Tech the previous weekend and was named the NAIA's Pitcher of the Week.

Robinson and Ephan both homered and drove in three runs in the game, while Matt Thompson also finished with three RBI. Whalen added two.

Kevin Hamann went six innings on the mound for LCSC and picked up the win to improve to 7-1 on the season. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs. He also struck out eight. David Wilson pitched the final scoreless inning.

The Warriors got rolling early in the first with three runs on three hits. Raymond Pedrina started the rally with a double and went to third on a single by Micah Brown. Whalen reached on a fielder's choice that score Pedrina. After a walk to Gunnar Buhner, Ephan singled in Whalen, and a wild pitch allowed Buhner to score.

LCSC made it 7-0 in the third. Brown started the rally with a double and scored on Robinson's two-run home run to right. After a strikeout, Ephan hit a solo home run to right center. Logan Griffin doubled and scored on a single by Thompson, who was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.

The Warriors added a run in the fourth on Whalen's RBI double, but College of Idaho countered with its first run against Hamann in the fifth on Dominic Conigliaro's RBI single.

LCSC made it 9-1 in the fifth on back-to-back two-out doubles by Griffin and Thompson, the latter producing a run.

After College of Idaho scored twice in the top of the sixth, the Warriors made it 13-3 with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Pedrina and Whalen were hit by pitched and Robinson followed with an RBI single. Buhner walked to load the bases and Ephan followed with a walk to force in a run. After a pitching change, Chase Hafer was hit by a pitch to force in another run, while Thompson brought in the final run on a rather odd play. He hit a line drive to shallow right field that College of Idaho right-fielder Ryan Murkle trapped. But because the baserunners couldn't tell if the ball was going to be caught, they held close to their base. Murkle came up throwing and forced out Hafer at second. College of Idaho was able to turn a double play when Ephan was tagged out trying to advance to third. However,  before the double play was recorded, Buhner had cross home plate so the run counted and Thompson was credited for reaching base on a fielder's choice, but did not get an RBI because a double play occurred.

College of Idaho had runners on first and third in the top of the seventh when the final out was made, which ended the game because of the 10-run rule.

The Warriors wasted little time in establishing control in the second game. After LCSC starter Matt Fish got out of his own jam in the top of the first when he walked three batters to load the bases but then retired Johnny Hyland on a grounder, the Warrior bats produced two runs in the bottom of the inning. Pedrina started the rally with a single and moved to third on a double by Brown. After Whalen walked to load the bases, Robinson singled in a run. Buhner then drove in the next on a sacrifice fly to center field.

While Fish regained his control and mowed through the Coyotes' lineup, the Warriors put up eight runs in the fifth for a 10-0 lead. Brown's one-out single to shallow center was followed by a walk to Whalen and Robinson being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Buhner then singled in a run and Ephan followed with his grand slam to deep left-center field. Relief pitcher Jake Eddy came in, but hit two batters and walked another to reload the bases. After a strikeout, a wild pitch allowed a run to score and another hit batter reloaded the bases. Whalen then singled in the final two runs. In all, LCSC sent 13 batters to the plate and had four batters hit by pitches along with four hits and two walks.

After College of Idaho scored a run against reliever Henry McAree in the top of the sixth, LCSC added two more in the bottom of the inning for a 12-1 lead. Two walks and a wild pitch put runners on second and third to set up a two-run single by Hafer.

Fish toiled through five innings with 106 pitchers, but allowed just one hit and struck out 10 with six walks. McAree gave up one hit and a run, and also recorded a strikeout.

LCSC is now 8-1 against College of Idaho this season.
