KEIZER, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State College baseball team pounded out 14 hits to produce 17 runs in the opener and then used the arm of
Matt Fish in the second game to sweep a doubleheader from Corban University in NAIA West play on Saturday.
LCSC took the first game, which was stopped after the seventh inning because of the 10-run rule, 17-4, and then claimed the second contest 4-3.
The sweep improved LCSC's win streak to 15 straight games, which is ninth longest in school history. The all-time record is 27, which came in the 1986 season.
LCSC is now 35-12 on the season and 22-7 in NAIA West play, while Corban slips to 13-31 and 7-24.
J.J. Robinson continued his hot bat and hit three home runs on the day. That brought his season total to 19, which is good for 10
th all-time on the LCSC single-season list. His two-year total of 34 ties him with Allan Peterson for sixth on the career home run list.
Four LCSC players finished with three RBI apiece in the opener matching teams with the same nickname, Warriors.
Raymond Pedrina,
Micah Brown,
Seaver Whalen, and
Kasey Bailey all drove in three runs apiece, while Robinson and
Brock Ephan finished with two apiece.
Kevin Hamann improved to 8-1 on the season for LCSC as he scattered 11 hits over six innings. He gave up four runs, but struck out nine.
LCSC got the ball rolling early as Robinson hit No. 17, a solo home run in the second inning, for a 1-0 lead.
LC added four in the third when Bailey singled and eventually scored on a single by Brown. Whalen followed with a two-run home run to left and Robinson hit No. 18, a solo shot to right for a 5-0 lead.
LCSC made it 8-0 in the fourth when Brown drove in two with a double and later scored on a single by Whalen.
The lead went to 14-0 in the fifth when LC scored six runs with the help of two errors and three hits. Bailey had a three-run triple, while Ephan singled in two.
Cooper Goldby added an RBI groundout.
After Corban scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, LC put up three in the top of the sixth for a 17-2 lead. Depaul Blunt singled and went to third on a double by Goldby. Pedrina then hit a three-run home run to finish LCSC's scoring.
In the second game, LCSC had to erase a 3-1 deficit to claim the win after Corban scored all three of its runs in the second inning with the help of two errors. After the second, Fish allowed only three baserunners the rest of the way and retired 13 in a row at one point.
Fish, 6-1 overall, has thrown both of LCSC's complete games this year. On April 1, he defeated the University of British Columbia 3-0 in Vancouver, B.C.
LCSC broke out on top 1-0 in the second when Robinson hit a solo home run to right, but Corban got its three-spot in the bottom of the inning on two walks, a hit batter, and then a fielding and a throwing error.
LC tied it in the fourth with two runs. Robinson started the rally with a single and Ephan followed with his sixth home run of the season, this one to left.
LC scored the eventual winning run in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Ephan drew a walk and then went to third on a single by
Kasey Bailey. A fielding error on a grounder hit by
Emilio Alcantar allowed Ephan to score.
Robinson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Ephan was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The two teams will play a single game at noon today, which will serve as the final regular season game for LCSC.
