Warriors on the road for conference openers

LEWISTON, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State's volleyball team is on the road again – this time for the Warriors' Frontier Conference openers.

The Warriors (5-6) take on Carroll College Friday at 6 p.m. and Montana Tech Saturday at 1 p.m. (times are Pacific).  LCSC has five common opponents with Carroll College (7-7) with basically the same results against common foes – both have losses to Dordt and College of Idaho (LC twice) and victories over Dickson State, Evergreen State and Walla Walla University.

Coach LaToya Harris-Alexander said the Warriors need to be particularly mindful of being patient and persistent against Carroll.

"Carroll is a very controlled team," she said. "They rarely make errors. We need to make sure we control the ball on our end and not have unforced errors."

Montana Tech heads into the weekend matches with a 7-5 overall record, which includes a 1-1 mark against common opponents. Tech has a victory over Dordt but, like LCSC, a loss to Morningside. The challenges will be different Saturday than Friday.

"They're big at the net," Harris-Alexander said. "Offensively, they're powerful. They can completely take your tempo away and get you into playing their system, which is going to be a key. We need to play our game and not try to match what they're doing."

What the Warriors have on their side is the momentum of a weekend sweep against Walla Walla University and Whitman College.

"It boosts your confidence but it also is something to use to roll into the next few matches," Harris-Alexander said. "To get those Ws in different ways – playing pretty relentless and the other one having a few errors, shows we still have room for growth but we also have the ability to succeed even if we have a few errors."

Luana Thompson is ranked second in the conference in digs per set with five, while Lauren West is third in assists per set (7.3), Natalie Batiste and Rachel Gregg are tied for third in kills per set (2.8), and Aubrey King is fifth in hitting percentage (.258).
