HAVRE, Mont. – Focusing on the little things led to a big win for the Lewis-Clark State volleyball team Saturday afternoon as the Warriors topped Montana State-Northern 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 in Frontier Conference action.
"We were focusing on the little things," coach
LaToya Harris-Alexander said after the Warriors won their first league competition and improved to 6-10, 1-4. "We need play smarter not just power."
After winning the first set 25-13, the Warriors fell behind 12-6 in the second. A timeout by Harris-Alexander brought about the needed refocus and LCSC outscored the Skylights 19-9 for the victory and the 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
"We started executing the way we discussed when we started," she said. "We had to get back to our philosophy."
The Warriors started strong in the third set but, again, had a bit of a lull before refocusing and dominating the latter part of the match and winning on
Rachel Gregg's 13
th kill of the match.
Justine Cota Culp added seven kills with
Luana Thompson contributing 13 digs.
Natalie Batiste and
Lauren West had 11 digs each. West also had 20 assists and
Hayley Alvarez had 17 as the Warriors turned in one of their most balanced efforts of the season.
Harris-Alexander said a bit part of their ability to do that was the backrow play of Thompson.
"She really stepped it up today and did her job consistently," Harris-Alexander said. "It starts with the back row."
