LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State Women's Basketball Team kicked off their 2018-19 campaign with a win over the Yellowstone Christian College Centurions. Led by
Jossilyn Blackman's double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds), the Warriors downed Yellowstone Christian by a final of 62-44.
"I saw a team that had limited practices. This is the earliest we've ever started playing," Head Coach
Brian Orr said. "I think this team has tremendous potential. I think we did some things real well and we are going to get better as the season progresses."
Cali Moscrip got the ball rolling right out of the gate, sinking a three ten seconds into the game. After the Centurions pulled ahead 11-10,
Abby Farmer used a pass from Moscrip at 4:22 to give the Warriors back the lead that they would hold the rest of the game. The basket sparked a seven-point run by the Warriors that was capped by a three-pointer from
Hannah Burland to give LC a 19-11 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
A free throw from
Hailey Turner followed by a three from Farmer stretched the lead to 23-11 with 9:32 remaining. The Warriors went on a 10-point tear in the second quarter, beginning with a three-point shot by
Emily Banks at 6:53.
Jamie Nielson hit three-straight baskets for LC, including a triple, and the Warriors padded the advantage to 33-15 with 2:12 to play in the half. Farmer found Blackman for a layup to end the half at 35-21.
The Warriors remained in control heading into the second half. The two teams traded baskets through the first half of the third quarter, but LC maintained a 15-point cushion throughout. The lead shrunk to 10 with under a minute to play before Banks found the basket to put the Warriors up 50-28 heading into the final frame.
Kiara Burlage sunk a free throw to begin a seven-point run in the fourth quarter. With 1:39 to play, Moscrip capped the lowest scoring quarter of the game with a jumper to put LC up 62-42. The Warriors held Yellowstone Christian to just six points in the quarter, ending with a final of 62-44.
Blackman led the way for LCSC, notching the first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards. Burlage also grabbed nine rebounds and newcomer Nielson dropped nine points. Moscrip dished out a career-high seven assists in the contest.
Freshmen Banks and Farmer had strong showing in their first bit of collegiate action. Banks added seven points to the Warriors' total and grabbed seven boards, while Farmer scored five and dished out five assists.
The Warriors face the same opponent tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in the Activity Center.
