Warriors Swept by No. 20 Argos to Begin Second Half of Conference

LEWISTON, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State Volleyball entered the second half of Frontier Conference play with a 3-3 record to sit in fifth-place in the standings. The No. 20 Providence Argonauts proved to be an offensive powerhouse on Friday night, sweeping the Warriors 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 18-25). The Argos outhit LC .233 to .045 in the contest.

Providence took a 6-3 to begin the match, but the Warriors answered back with a five-point run to take an 8-6 lead. Jordan Phelan provided a service ace to fuel the run, while Brooke Kaawa and Sydney Lawrence teamed up for a block. A kill from Rachel Gregg put the Warriors in front 10-8, and a block by Van Vleet and Gregg kept the momentum up for the Warriors at 14-12. LC carried their lead to 21-20 before the Argos broke out with five-straight to take the set 25-21.

A block by Gregg and Van Vleet gave LC an early lead in the second frame at 2-1. The Argos were not phased and quickly retook the lead on two Warrior errors and a kill to go up 6-4. LC came within one with an ace from Lawrence to cut the deficit to 10-9. The Argos continued to roll through the set, winning it 25-17.

Providence didn't let up in set three, opening the set with a 7-2 advantage. A kill from Kaawa and an ace from Hannah Pond brought LC within one at 8-7, but the Argos charged on to take the set 25-18, sweeping the Warriors 3-0.

"I think we fought hard at the end, but it was hard because we really didn't play how we wanted to," senior Alexa Van Vleet said. "I think something that will help us is looking to the girl beside us and playing for them and totally forgetting about ourselves."

Gregg led the Warriors with nine kills on the night and King added six. Van Vleet did her part on defense with five block assists and Gionni Brown had 17 digs.
With the loss, the Warriors fall to 3-4 in Frontier play and 13-6 overall.

The Warriors look to bounce back quickly tomorrow when they host MSU-Northern in the Activity Center at 2 p.m
