LEWISTON, Idaho – They may have started off slow, but the Lewis-Clark State Women's Basketball Team came roaring back in the second quarter to defeat to the University of the Virgin Islands 93-58.
Jossilyn Blackman continued her dominant senior season, leading the team with 19 points for her fifth-straight game with at least 14 points. She is now averaging over 17 points per game.
Jamie Nielson and
Hannah Burland also scored big, each dropping 16 points in the victory.
LC grabbed the lead early with baskets from
Hailey Turner, Nielson,
Abbie Johnson and Blackman to go up 8-4 half way through the first quarter. After a delay in the quarter, the Lady Buccaneers regrouped to take the lead with a five-point run. A free throw by
Abby Farmer evened the match 15-15, by a layup at the buzzer gave UVI the lead at the end of the opening frame.
Trailing 17-15 at the beginning of the second quarter, the Warriors kicked their offense into high-gear to outscore the Lady Buccaneers 25-7 in the period. A massive 18-point run fueled LC's momentum as they came back to take a commanding 37-22 lead. Neilson sparked the rally with a jumper at 5:47 and
Emily Banks added six-straight points with a three-pointer, layup and free throw. Burland capped the run with a three with under a minute to play in the half. A triple by Blackman sent the Warriors into halftime with a 40-24 advantage.
Turner kick started the second half with basket on an assist from
Cali Moscrip less than a minute in. A free throw from
Kiara Burlage at 4:11 started a 14-point rally that lasted three minutes and the Warriors ended the third quarter leading 66-38.
The fourth quarter was much of the same, with LC going on a run of 11 unanswered points including three-pointers from Banks and Nielson. Johnson capped the run with a pair of free throws at 5:59. The offense proved too much for UVI to overcome and the Warriors coasted to a 93-58 win.
The Warriors' bench have proven that it is extremely deep. LC scored 44 of its 93 points off the bench, led by Burland's 17.
"Absolutely everybody can play," Head Coach
Brian Orr said. "We have a lot of depth and we've got more depth coming and different combinations. It's fun to experiment with it in a game like this."
Moscrip led the team with six assists in the game and Turner blocked two shots. Burland added three steals to her successful night. Blackman, Nielson and Burland each hits three triples, with Blackman marking the first multi-three-pointer game of her career.
The Warriors head to Oregon for their next set of games. They will face Northwest on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. and Corban on Nov. 17 at 6 p.m.
