LC Volleyball Sweeps Carroll to Close out the Regular Season on Senior Day

LEWISTON, Idaho – The afternoon began with a tribute to the seven seniors of the Lewis-Clark State Volleyball Team, and ended with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-16) sweep of the Carroll Fighting Saints. The Warriors won big rallies and went on massive runs to overpower Carroll and close out the regular season with a momentum-building win.

Senior Rachel Gregg was at the forefront of the offensive attack and led the match with 16 kills. She logged her 11th double-double of the year by also adding 13 digs.

The first set seemed to be controlled by Carroll as the Saints took a 12-6 lead right out of the gates. The Warriors responded, though, with a huge 12-1 run to put themselves in the driver's seat. Brooke Kaawa and Lauren West went back-to-back with kills to spark the run, and Gregg added four kills as fuel en route to the 18-13 advantage. The rest of the set was all LC with it ending at 25-21.

Carroll rebounded in the second set and led the frame until Gregg evened things at 16-16. The kill sparked a 7-1 run that ended with the Warriors in front 22-17. West added a kill before Kaawa and Olivia Jarvis put up a block to close the set 25-19 to give LC a 2-0 set advantage.

The Fighting Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the third set, and they led until Kaawa knotted the set at nine apiece with a kill. Gregg and Sydney Lawrence each sent down kills and Hannah Pond added an ace to fuel a five-point run and push the Warriors ahead 13-9. A 6-1 run was capped by a block from Gregg and Lawrence to end the match 3-0 in favor of the Warriors.

As mentioned, Gregg was an offensive powerhouse in her final home match of the regular season. Gionni Brown was all over the court and collected 21 digs in impressive fashion. Jordan Phelan also did her part on defense with 13 digs. Pond was stellar with her serves and tallied four service aces along with nine digs. West dished out 31 assists and now sits 10th all-time in LCSC volleyball history with 1,524 assists.

The Warriors overpowered Carroll with 41 kills compared to the Fighting Saints' 27. They held Carroll to just a .080 attack percentage.

Prior to the match, the team recognized its seven seniors, Hayley Alvarez, Rachel Gregg, Olivia Jarvis, Aubrey King, Mikayla Sellers-Wiebe, Alexa Van Vleet and Lauren West were all honored in their final home game.

"Feelings postgame are all sweet," King said. "There was no better way for this moment to go. It was such a blessing to play with all of these girls."

"With these girls and every single person on this team, there is an unexplainable bond between us," Gregg said. "To be able to go out there and look into their eyes and know that we are playing for each other means that we can accomplish anything."

LC Volleyball now turns its attention to the Frontier Conference Tournament which begins Friday at Butte, Mont. The Warriors face Carroll again to open the tournament.
