LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State Warriors played from behind early in the game, but once they took the lead eight minutes in there was no looking back. They picked up their fourth-straight win with a 90-53 victory of the University of the Virgin Islands.
Hannah Burland posted career numbers, dropping double-digits for the first time with 18 points.
Jossilyn Blackman continued to lead the Warrior offense with her fourth-straight game with at least 14 points after totaling 18.
Hailey Turner and
Kiara Burlage both posted double-doubles in the contest. Turner notched her seventh-career double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, while Burlage tallied the first of her career with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Warriors trailed for the first eight minutes of the game, down by as many as eight points, before Turner evened the score at 17-17 with two to play in the opening quarter.
Emily Banks put up five-straight in the final minute of the quarter to give LC a 22-19 lead.
Turner opened the second quarter with a layup on an assist from
Jamie Nielson before Nielson nailed a three to push the advantage to 27-26 two minutes in. A jumper by
Peyton Souvenir padded the lead at 35-25 half way through the period, and the first half closed with the Warriors in front 41-33.
LC controlled the second half, outscoring the Lady Buccaneers 49-20. Turner hit a basket before Burland drained a three to get the momentum going for the Warriors in the first four minutes of the half. A three-pointer by
Cali Moscrip was followed by another from Burland at 5:46 to stretch the lead to 52-37, and Turner closed out the quarter with a free throw to send the Warriors into the fourth quarter with a 62-40 lead.
Emily Banks opened the frame with a free throw which was followed by one from Blackman and a three by Burlage to give LC a 28-point lead a minute in. The Warriors went on an eight-point run starting with a layup from Burlage at 5:22 to go ahead 84-47. At 3:13, Burland found the basket to put LC up 89-49 and the game closed with the Warriors in front 90-53.
"We struggled offensively in the first half, and we are going to change some things tomorrow," Head Coach
Brian Orr said. "We play somebody one way one night, you want to make sure you go with something a little bit different the next night."
As mentioned, Burland and Blackman led the scoring efforts with 18 points each. Turner and Burlage each notched double-doubles in the contest; the first time two Warriors have had a double-double in the same game since
Brittany Tackett and
Caelyn Orlandi in Jan. of 2017.
The Warriors face UVI again tomorrow in the Activity Center at 4 p.m.
