Warriors open 2018 with sweep of CWU

Lewiston, Idaho–The Lewis-Clark State Warriors opened the 2018 season with a double-header sweep of Central Washington Saturday at Harris Field.

LC won 10-1 and 11-5 and never trailed in the two games.  The 2-0 Warriors, and three-time defending NAIA champions, opened up the new season's scoring when Lewiston's Riley Way singled in Makana Victorine in the second inning. LC would add another run in the inning on Raymond Pedrina's sacrifice fly.  The Warriors built the lead to 6-0 thanks to another Way RBI hit, and Kaisey Bailey's two-run double.  Tyler McDowell launched a three-run home run in the eighth inning to close out the Warrior scoring.

LC split the pitching duties in the two games between eight players, four in each game, with starter Justin Hammergren getting the credit for the win in game one.  Hammergren pitched four innings, and did not allow run, while surrendering just four hits.  Lewiston's Kade Woods pitched two middle innings, and, along with Efrain Del Rio and Gage Burland, held the Wildcats to just one hit.  LC had 15 hits, led by Max Draijer's three singles.

In game two, LC jumped out to a 9-0 first-inning lead, sending 13 batters to the plate.  The Warriors had four hits, and Central issued five walks, and hit one Warrior in the inning.  The big hit in the inning was Cory Voss's two-run single.  LC added two runs in the fourth inning thanks to a Wildcat error, and Matt Thompson's RBI single.  Voss and Joey Parente each collected two hits, and Parente added three RBI.

Starter Tyler Burch picked up the victory for LC going four innings and allowing two runs.  Brady Tedesco, Rian Bassett and Joseph Riley also saw time on the mound for LC.

On the day, Draijer picked up four hits, and Parente led LC with four RBI.

The Warriors will be in action next Friday, at 3 p.m., for the start of a four-game series with Concordia University.
