LEWISTON, Idaho – Freshman
Peyton Souvenir drained four free throws in the final 13.9 seconds to help Lewis-Clark State preserve a crucial 58-51 Frontier Conference victory over Providence Thursday night at the Activity Center.
Granted, Souvenir, who finished with eight points, had the last-second heroics but she was backed by the total team effort of her fellow Warriors as LC improved to 15-9 overall, 6-7 in the conference. Providence is 16-8, 7-6.
"It's just giant," coach
Brian Orr said. "Getting the win tonight is so important. It's something we can build on."
Of course, he wasn't happy about the Warriors' 19 turnovers but he was pleased with the way his team followed the game plan and all the adjustments within it.
"Making them play defense was really a critical part to our success," Orr said. "If we didn't get anything in that first seven, eight seconds, then we made them guard us. Then you have a tendency to look inside a lot more."
The result was 13 points from
Jossilyn Blackman, 11 from
Brittany Tackett and nine from
Hailey Turner – and a combined 15 of 28 from the post players. Turner also had three blocked shots.
There was a measure of relief, too, at beating the Argos for the first time in three tries this season.
"I thought the last four road games toughened us," Orr said. "I was hoping we would be able to close the deal on tight games here. Tonight, we were able to do it."
The Warriors shot 46 percent from the field and totaled 17 assists with senior
Lauren Johnson leading the way with six.
