Hammergren, Voss help Warriors shut out OIT 9-0

03.16.2018

Box Score LEWISTON, Idaho – Junior left-hander Justin Hammergren enjoyed another solid outing and Cory Voss hit a three-run home run to power the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team to a 9-0 win over Oregon Tech in NAIA West play at LCSC's Harris Field on Friday night.

Hammergren combined with right-hander Matt Becker on a four-hitter as the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Warriors won their sixth game in a row to improve 18-5 overall and a NAIA West leading 8-1.  The Owls drops to 12-16 overall and 4-5 in league play.

Hammergren, who came to the LCSC program last fall from Tucson, Ariz.,  improved to 5-0 on the season. Despite having the flu early in the week, Hammergren was rock solid and allowed just three hits over six innings. He also struck out seven.

Becker, a junior from Petaluma, Calif., allowed one hit over the final three innings and picked up his first save of the season. He also struck out two.

The two LCSC pitchers did not allow a walk in the game.

"It felt good," Hammergren said of his performance. "It was a long week being sick most of it, but I just wanted to stick to my normal routine and attack and compete."

Hammergren, who retired the first 11 batter he faced Friday, lowered his earned run average to 1.50 on the season. He leads the team in innings pitched (36), strikeouts (33) and is second in opponents' batting average as teams are hitting just .189 against him.

The only other regular pitcher to lead Hammergren in ERA and opponents' batting average is Becker, who is also in his first year of the program. Becker has pitched 18.2 innings and has a 1.45 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .172 against him.

The two were so dominate that no OIT player reached second base.

The Warriors also were outstanding at the plate as they collected 15 hits, 11 of which were singles. Voss hit his team-leading sixth home run and drove in three runs, while Raymond Pedrina collected two hits and drove in three runs. Tyler McDowell had two triples and two RBI.

LCSC got to OIT starter Chad Wago (4-2) with a pair of runs in the third inning. Pedrina started the rally with a double to right-center field and Voss drew a one-out walk. McDowell followed with a two-run triple to right.

The Warriors made it 4-0 in the sixth inning. Thomas Lampkin Jr. and Makana Victorine laid down consecutive bunts for singles, but Lampkin Jr. was forced out at third when Max Draijer also bunted. Riley Way walked to load the bases and Pedrina followed with a two-run single to left.

LCSC broke the game open with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth. After singles by Josh Moore and Kyle Callahan, Pedrina drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly to center.  Kasey Bailey then singled to right and Voss followed with his three-run blast to left field to make it 8-0. McDowell tripled to left and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Darren Trainer.

The Warriors have won their last five league games by a combined score of 49-14.

"I think we are the best team in the nation," Hammergren said. "The players trust each other and we feel we have the best team."

The Warriors and Owls continue their four-game series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday. The final game of the series is Sunday at 11 a.m.

Originally the four-game series was to be played in Klamath Falls, Ore., but was moved to Lewiston because of snow and cold conditions in Klamath Falls.
