CALDWELL, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State split a doubleheader against the College of Idaho Saturday on the road. The Warriors held on to win 7-5 in the opener, but gave up a four-run lead in game two, losing 6-4.
LCSC (28-8, 18-4 NAIA West), ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, rode the pitching of
Tyler Burch in the first game. After Burch (7-1) surrendered two first-inning runs, he held the Coyotes (11-32, 4-23 NAIA West) scoreless until the Coyotes put three on the board in the seventh.
LC tied the game 2-2 in the second on a bases loaded walk, and a groundout. The Warriors made it 5-2 in the fifth when
Kyle Callahan singled in
Kasey Bailey, and
Riley Way slammed a two-run double.
Pinch hitter
Kody Garvin added an RBI double in the seventh, and scored on
Raymond Pedrina's triple, to give the Warriors a 7-2 lead.
College of Idaho then made things interesting. Trailing 7-5 in the ninth inning, the Coyotes loaded the bases. With one out, Warrior coach
Jeremiah Robbins brought in reliever
Gage Burland, who promptly induced a game-ending double play to pick up his fifth save.
Cory Voss went 2-4, as LC collected 10 hits, and had seven men reach base via a walk. Burch struck out six, and allowed five hits in 6 1/3 innings, to earn the victory.
In the second game, the Warriors led 4-0 after two innings. Voss singled in
Raymond Pedrina in the first inning then struck again in the second inning. After Pedrina's RBI single, Voss connected on his team-leading ninth home run, a two-run shot.
The lead lasted until College of Idaho knocked out LC starter
Anthony Toribio with a five-run fifth inning.
Kade Woods relieved, and finished the game, but took the loss despite allowing just two runs, one earned, in 3 2/3 innings.
The Warriors could not push across a run in the final seven innings. LC outhit the Coyotes 9-6, but stranded 11 base runners. Voss and Way each collected two hits, and Voss' three RBI led LC.
The win in game two for College of Idaho snapped a 13-game overall losing streak, and 11 straight to LC.
The teams wrap up the four-game series Sunday with a single game at 11 A.M.
