KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State Warriors jumped out to a large lead, and kept two long streaks alive in a 19-3 victory over Oregon Tech in the first of a five-game NAIA West series. LC, designated the home team in a game rescheduled after a rainout in Lewiston in mid March, scored in every inning but one.
With the victory, LC (30-8, 20-4 NAIA West) has now recorded at least 30 wins every year since 1975. The win also is the 31
st consecutive against Oregon Tech (21-24, 10-14 NAIA West) dating back to 2012.
The seventh-ranked Warriors jumped out a 1-0 lead in the first inning on
Raymond Pedrina's lead off home run, his fourth long ball of the year.
Thomas Lampkin Jr. brought home a Warrior with a ground out followed by
Joey Parente's two-run single to give LC a 4-0 lead.
The Warriors made it 8-0 in the second inning.
Kasey Bailey's RBI single started the scoring, and a single by
Cory Voss plated two more Warriors.
Darren Trainor picked up the final run of the inning when his hard liner to the Owl shortstop was mishandled.
LC upped its lead to 9-0 in the fourth inning on Lampkin's single to center. The Warriors then added three more runs in the fifth inning. Bailey struck again, this time with a two-run double, then scored on a single by Voss.
Pedrina put LC ahead 13-1 with a sixth-inning single.
Kyle Callahan came off the bench in the seventh inning and promptly delivered a two-run pinch-hit home run, his sixth of the year, and an Owl error stretched LC's lead to 16-1.
Oregon Tech powered up in the top of the eighth, belting back-to-back homers to pull within 16-3, but a pinch-hit single by
Mason Verge and a two-run double off the bat of
Riley Way finished off the scoring in the bottom of the inning. The 19 runs scored by the Warriors is a season high.
LC also finished with a season-high 26 hits, fourth-highest ever in a game for a Warrior team, and the most since 2002 when they had a record 29 against Central Washington. Pedrina went 4-6, with two RBI, while
Tyler McDowell went 4-4. Bailey and Voss each finished with three RBI.
Lalo Porras (1-0) started on the mound for LC and picked up his first win of the season. Porras went six innings and allowed six hits, one run, struck out five, and did not issue a walk. In fact, along with relievers
Tyler Charlo and
Brady Tedesco, the Warrior pitching staff did not walk a batter.
The teams will meet in a doubleheader Sunday at noon, and two more games on Monday.
