Warrior Volleyball Sweeps Whitworth in Home Opener

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State Volleyball Team returned to their winning ways on Wednesday with a sweep of the Whitworth Pirates. 15 different Warriors got in on the action, led by Rachel Gregg with nine kills and Lauren West with 34 assists.

The Warriors got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set with a kill by Olivia Jarvis and an ace from West. Tied 7-7, a kill from Alexa Van Vleet and a pair from Gregg put LCSC back in the lead at 10-7 and the offense continued to roll. Kills from Jarvis and Mikayla Sellers-Wiebe grew the advantage to six at 16-10. Van Vleet, Jordan Phelan and West combined for three-straight kills to give the Warriors a comfortable lead at 20-12, and a pair of kills by Gregg from West pushed the set to its 25-16 final.

Whitworth held a slight lead over LC in the second set until a kill from Gregg gave the Warriors a 9-8 lead. The Pirates battled back and evened the contest 11-11 before Gregg sparked a run of five unanswered points that included back-to-back aces from West to give LC a 16-11 advantage. Two aces from Gregg and a kill from Jarvis were a part of a seven-point run by the Warriors as they went up 23-12, and a kill from Sellers-Wiebe ended the second set 25-15.

A five-point run in the third set gave LC a 9-4 lead early, fueled by kills from Gionni Brown, Brooke Kaawa and Danyel Martin. The Pirates battled back to come within one until a Hayley Alvarez and Sellers-Wiebe went back-to-back to give LCSC a slim 24-21 advantage. Sydney Lawrence closed out the match with a kill from West in the 25-22 set victory.

As mentioned, Gregg led the Warriors with nine kills on the night. 11 different Warriors registered kills in the three-set contest, including six each from Jarvis and Sellers-Wiebe. West dished out 34 assists and Brown led the team with 14 digs. Hannah Pond tallied six digs and Gregg added five.

The Warriors bounced back well after a tough five-set loss to Providence on Saturday.

"Every single player on our roster knows what Warrior Volleyball is supposed to look like," Head Coach Shaun Pohlman said. "It didn't happen then, and they know it didn't happen so it was easy to move forward."

The Warriors continue their home stand on Saturday when they host their first home conference game of the season. They will face Montana Western at 2 p.m. in the LCSC Activity Center.
