GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Warriors stretched their win streak to seven-straight with two wins on Saturday to sweep the weekend (3-0). The biggest win of the weekend came Saturday morning when LCSC Volleyball downed No. 17 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) in four sets (25-15, 11-25, 25-18, 25-19).
Rachel Gregg could not be stopped. The senior notched two double-doubles while also setting a new career-high in kills in both matches. She totaled 38 kills on Saturday for a weekend mark of 51.
LCSC defeats No. 17 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 3-1 (25-15, 11-25, 25-18, 25-19)
The Warriors started their day with a huge win over No. 17 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), defeating a tough opponent 3-1 (25-15, 11-25, 25-18, 25-19).
Rachel Gregg dominated the court in commanding fashion, notching her second-straight double-double with a career-high 18 kills and 10 digs, with an attack percentage of .471. The senior also tallied two service aces, three solo blocks and four block assists.
The Warriors came roaring out of the gate, striking for the first four points of the game.
Aubrey King provided some of the fire power with two kills before
Lauren West added one of her own to grow the lead to 5-1. The Eagles rallied back to come within three with 15-12, but a kill from
Alexa Van Vleet sparked a run of six unanswered LCSC points. Four different Warriors contributed to the run to give LC a 21-12 advantage. After allowing three Embry-Riddle points, LCSC settled in to rattle off four-straight, capped by a kill from Gregg to end the first set at 25-15.
The momentum made its way to the side of the Eagles for set two, and the Warriors went down quickly by a set score of 25-11 to even the match 1-1.
LCSC bounced back well in the third set, opening with a kill from
Olivia Jarvis and a kill and ace from Gregg to take a 4-1 lead. Jarvis and Gregg combined to put up back-to-back blocks to grow the advantage to 10-6, but Embry-Riddle fired back to take a 17-16 lead. A Jarvis kill from West put LCSC back in front at 19-18, sparking a seven-point run to end the set at 25-18.
The Warriors continued to roll in the third set. After falling behind 7-6, LCSC went on a 7-1 run to gain a 13-8 lead. Van Vleet started the run with a kill, aided by an ace from
Hannah Pond and a pair of kills from Gregg. The Eagles climbed back within one, but the Warriors kicked things back into gear with kills from
Mikayla Sellers-Wiebe, Gregg and a pair from Van Vleet to push the advantage to 23-17. A pair of kills from Gregg ended the set 25-19 and gave the Warriors a 3-1 match victory.
As mentioned, Gregg could not be stopped. She led the game with 18 kills, seven total blocks, and tied for the game-high with two service aces. West dished out 38 assists and
Gionni Brown tallied 13 digs. The Warriors outhit the Eagles, totaling 48 kills to Embry-Riddle's 34. With the same number of attempts, 113, the Warriors managed a .230 attack percentage compared to the Eagles' .115.
"We had our struggles, but at the end of the day we overcame the struggles that we had dealt with the first week," Head Coach
Shaun Pohlman said. "Rachel had a great game. She figured things out for herself and it was great for her. We responded really well to a good team."
LCSC defeats Medicine Hat College 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21)
The Warriors concluded their perfect weekend with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21) win over Medicine Hat College.
Gregg only got better in the second set, setting a new career-high for the second match in a row with 20 kills. She also notched her third-straight double-double after adding 12 digs.
LCSC got off to a good start in the opening set of their second match of the day by taking advantage of Medicine Hat errors to take a 9-4 lead. The Rattlers battled back to keep the set even until striking for five-straight late in the set to take a commanding 24-18 lead. They went on to take the set 25-20.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams until the Warriors busted open for nine unanswered points to take a strong 20-10 lead. Gregg sparked the rally with a kill from West, and a pair of aces from Brown aided by kills from
Hayley Alvarez and West padded the advantage. The offense continued to overpower the Rattlers before a kill from Gregg ended the set at 25-17, evening the match at 1-1.
Medicine Hat took an early lead in the third set, climbing to a 9-8 advantage. Pressure from the Warriors forced several Rattler errors, and a kill from Sellers-Wiebe helped push LCSC in front at 16-10. A five-point rally by Medicine Hat gave the Rattlers a 19-18 lead and the lead continued to change hands until Gregg and Alvarez provided back-to-back kills to go ahead 24-21. As she had done all day, Gregg ended the set at 25-22 with a big kill.
The Rattlers and Warriors battled to a 10-10 tie in the fourth set and freshman
Madeleine Taylor stepped up big for LC, tallying back-to-back service aces for a 13-10 lead. LCSC controlled the set from there on out. Keeping a small cushion for the rest of the set, West ended the match with an ace at 25-21 to give the Warriors their seventh-straight win.
As mentioned, Gregg was a menace on the court, leading the contest with 20 kills. Sellers-Wiebe also reached double-digits with 10.
Jordan Phelan, Taylor and Brown each tallied two aces while Jarvis, Seller-Wiebe and Van Vleet all put up three blocks. West dished 38 assists and Brown provided defense with 15 digs.
The Warriors travel to Havre, Mont. on Friday to open Frontier Conference play against Montana State-Northern at 6 p.m.
