HAVRE, Mont. - It came down to the final seconds, but the No. 16 Lewis-Clark State Warriors were able to hang on to defeat the MSU-Northern Skylights 51-49 on Saturday night. In the back-and-forth contest, Delaney Henery's 3-pointer and three free throws in the final moments gave LC the push it needed to complete their fourth-straight win and improve to 13-2 overall and 3-1 in conference.
"I was really proud of our team's mental toughness the weekend," Head Coach Brian Orr said. "This is definitely the toughest road trip we make. Having to play back-to-back games in this league is really difficult."
Hailey Turner opened the scoring with a 3 at 8:25 to get LC on the board, followed by a layup from Cali Moscrip to give the Warriors a 5-0 advantage early in the first frame. Less than a minute later, Moscrip added to the lead with a three from the corner. The Skylights fought back to even the score at 10 each at 4:55.
With 2:30 on the clock in the first quarter, Henery hit two free throws to put LC in front 13-12. At the close of the first period, the Skylights led 16-15.
Jossilyn Blackman's three free throws early in the second quarter put the Warriors up 20-18 to kick off a hectic period of basketball. The lead changed hands multiple times throughout the frame before Henery hit a layup as the clock ran out to give the Warriors a 28-26 lead at the half.
The Skylights gained momentum out of the locker room, taking a 32-28 lead to open the second half. The two teams exchanged points and MSUN held a 41-38 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
A triple from Peyton Souvenir put the lead back in the hands of the Warriors at 43-42 at the 6:13 mark of the fourth quarter. Abbie Johnson added a bucket two minutes later, but the Skylights bounced back to take a 46-45 lead with a minute to play.
Henery hit a clutch 3-pointer to put LC back in front with 38 seconds on the clock, then drained three free throws to keep the Warriors ahead. They hung on to take the contest 51-49.
"I was really worried that we would have a let down after last night's nail-biter, but I have to give the Skylights and Coach Mouat all the credit for our inefficiencies on offense because their defense was outstanding," Orr said. "Just like last night, every possession was a battle and being able to find a way to win is an important step to developing a winning mentality. It also makes the 11-hour bus trip home a little easier to take."
Blackman, Turner and Henery all dropped 10 points each. Blackman was one board shy of her third-straight double-double, leading the defense with nine rebounds.
The Warriors outrebounded the NAIA's second best rebound defending team by two (39-37).
LC returns home next week to face a strong Frontier Conference opponent in No. 8 Carroll College. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
