LEWISTON, Idaho –
Cali Moscrip hit a career-high 23 points as No. 17 Lewis-Clark State College leveled No. 21 Rocky Mountain, 66-42, in Frontier Conference women's basketball action Thursday night at the Activity Center.
Moscrip, whose total was the best by a Warrior this season, connected on nine of 12 field goal attempts as LC combined for a 43.6 percent shooting night. Moscrip, a senior from Lewiston, included five of eight from 3-point range in her total.
The Warriors never trailed and led by as many as 25 points in the late going. They were equally dominating on the boards with a 49-36 advantage, led by 12 from
Jossilyn Blackman. Blackman added 12 points to record her sixth double-double of the season.
Hailey Turner was the third LC player to reach double figures with 11 points.
Those factors, combined with a shutdown defense, gave the Warriors what coach
Brian Orr believes might have been their best game of the season.
"We can be good in a lot of different areas," he said after the Warriors improved to 18-6 overall and 8-5 – and still third, in league play. "Our defense was really good all night long. I really thought we executed our offense extremely well. I appreciate the way we valued the ball tonight."
The ploy going into the game was to stifle the Battlin' Bears' (16-9, 7-6) inside game and force them to the perimeter. While Orr said there were moments of worry early on as Rocky was shelling the Warriors with 3-point attempts, they made just three of 26 on the night and the concern was for naught.
"We over-extended our inside help," he said. "Their strength is really inside."
As for Moscrip, it was a coming-of-age game, so to speak, for her.
"This is definitely the best game she's played in a Warrior uniform," he said. "Cali has, finally, the last few games played with the demeanor she has in practice. She's really grown."
Brooke Jones had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Rocky Mountain.
There is no rest for the Warriors, who play host to eighth-ranked Carroll College Saturday afternoon at 2 at the Activity Center. Carroll kept its hold on second in the league with a Thursday night victory over third-ranked Montana Western.
For Moscrip, Turner and Blackman, it will be their final regular-season game at the Activity Center as the Warriors celebrate Senior Day.
