CALDWELL, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State College rode a five-run fifth inning and used seven pitchers en route to a 6-4 victory over College of Idaho Sunday afternoon.
Thomas Lampkin Jr., who led the Warriors with a four-for-four appearance at the plate, led off the fifth with a single. He stole second before advancing to third on
A.J. Davis' single. Davis advanced to second when
Riley Way grounded out to third with
Darren Trainor driving in Lampkin with a single to right. Davis scored on
Zach Needham's sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 (LC plated a single run in the second).
Kody Garvin was hit by a pitch, which also advanced Trainor to second and set up
Dalton Duarte's three-run home run over the right-field fence to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead.
"We were able to group some runs in one inning that ended up making the difference in the game," said coach
Jake Taylor after the Warriors evened their record at 8-8-1. "We used seven pitchers to complete the game with
Joe Riley closing it out."
The Coyotes scored all four of their runs in the sixth but Warrior pitchers allowed just two base runners in the final three innings with Riley sending the Coyotes down in order in the ninth to end the game. The Warrior pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts with
Andrew Najeeb-Brush matching Riley's three in his two innings.
Lampkin, who tied an LC single-game record with three stolen bases, led the Warriors at the plate with Duarte the RBI leader with three off of his second home run of the season.
The Warriors return to Harris Field Friday for a four-game series with Vanguard. First pitch for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday is noon.
