Baseball Tallies 22 Hits in Sweep of Owls

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Warriors bounced back on Saturday to take both halves of a twin bill against the visiting Oregon Tech Owls. LC made necessary improvements both in the field and at the plate, playing all 18 innings without an error while tallying 22 hits including two home runs from Kyle Callahan.

"I think the collective energy was much better today," coach Jake Taylor said. "The bats were pretty good in game one and our starting pitching and bullpen were good in game two."

GAME ONE: LCSC def. Oregon Tech 11-2
Justin Hammergren began his day with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first.

Darren Trainor ripped a two-out double to the wall in left center to spark the offense in the home half of the first, and Callahan wore a pitch to put two on. Kody Garvin walked to load the bases for Dalton Duarte who crushed a no-doubter into the battings cages in right for a grand slam.

Zach Needham reached on a two-out walk in the bottom of the second and moved to third on a double to the left field corner by A.J. Davis. A balk brought in Needham to bring the score to 5-0.

Callahan added to the Warriors' lead in bottom of the third with a solo shot to lead off the inning.

The Warrior defense produced some web gems with diving catches from Jeff Bart and Garvin in the outfield to help keep the Owls off the board.

Trainor led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right. Courtesy runner Jesus Duran stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error before Callahan was hit by a pitch putting runners on the corners. A bloop single into no-man's land by Garvin knocked in Duran to make it 8-0.

Isaac Wersland kept the inning going with an RBI single to plate Callahan. Riley Way shot a base hit up the middle to bring in two more and Needham made it 11-0 with his own RBI single.

The Owls managed two runs in the top of the seventh, but that is all they were able to muster.
Jeremy Rabauliman came in to close out the game and struck out three in an inning and two thirds.

Trainor led the offense with three hits while Duarte had four RBI thanks to his first-inning grand slam. Four Warriors notched multi-hit games.

GAME TWO: LCSC def. Oregon Tech 4-2
Anthony Toribio got off to a good start in game two, striking out the side in the top of the second.

Duran notched a two-out double in the bottom of the third before coming around to score on a Needham single for the game's first run.

The Owls tied the game in the top of the fifth on a hit batter and two hits, but Jesse Parker came in and struck out an OIT batter to end the inning.

Garvin reached on a walk to lead off the home half of the fifth before stealing second. He moved to third on a bunt single by Bart. Needham singled to put LC back in front 2-1.

OIT threatened in the sixth, but Makana Victorine threw out a runner trying to take second to send the Warriors back to the plate.

Trainor stayed hot at the plate with a double to kick off the Warriors' half of the seventh and came around to score on a base hit by Garvin to bring the score to 3-1. The Owls answered back in the seventh, but a double play turned by Duran at short ended the threat.

Callahan capped his day with his second solo shot as LC took game two 4-2.

Needham totaled three hits in the contest along with two RBI.

Toribio went 4.1 innings in his start and had five strikeouts. Parker, Kade Woods and Joe Riley all threw well in relief and combined to give up just four hits over 4.2 innings.

The Warriors complete their four-game series with the Owls tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
