KEIZER, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State baseball team got both games started with a bang against Corban on Saturday. The Warriors had leadoff homeruns in both game of the twin bill, with
Thomas Lampkin Jr. sending the second pitch he saw over the fence and
A.J. Davis doing the dame to the first pitch of game two. LC combined for five homeruns on the day to take game one 8-1, and game two 6-4.
"We had a better collective effort today with our focus," coach
Jake Taylor said. "(Justin) Hammergren and (Andrew) Najeeb-Brush were sharp in game one.
Matt Becker came into game two and secured the middle innings with a great effort."
GAME ONE: LCSC def. Corban 8-1
The Warriors started scoring on the game's second pitch with a lead-off solo shot off the bat of
Thomas Lampkin Jr.
Zach Needham went deep in the inning as well to give LC a 2-0 lead before
Justin Hammergren took the mound. The senior struck out two in his first inning of work to send the Warriors back to the plate.
Corban pitching began to struggle in the third when both Lampkin Jr. and
A.J. Davis were hit by a pitch. A balk moved both into scoring position before Needham walked to load the bases. A walk to
Kyle Callahan plated the third Warrior run.
Darren Trainor eliminated a lead-off walk with a pick off at first before Hammergren recorded his third strikeout of the game. The Warriors completed an unconventional 1-2-3 inning with a fly out to
Jeff Bart in center. Two more strikeouts from the Warriors' starter in the fourth kept Corban off the board.
Needham and Trainor created havoc on the bases in the top of the fifth. After Needham reached on a fielder's choice, Trainor singled to left. Needham pushed for third and was safe, and Trainor took second on the throw. An errant throw to second attempting to catch Trainor brought Needham home to bring the score to 4-0.
Corban struck for a run on one hit in the home half of the fifth, but
Andrew Najeeb-Brush came on in relief to end the inning. He faced the minimum in sixth, seventh and eighth.
LC batted around in the ninth to put up four runs on six hits.
Kody Garvin notched his first hit of the day with a double to open the ninth. A ground out moved him to second before Davis knocked him in with a single up the middle. Trainor reached on a fielder's choice that moved Davis is third before a balk brought him in. Callahan added on to the lead with a two-run blast down the right field line to grow the advantage to 8-1.
Najeeb-Brush sat down Corban in order in the ninth, finishing the game with two punch outs.
Riley Way led LC with three hits, while Davis, Needham and Trainor all notched two hits each. Callahan tallied three RBI. The Warriors benefited from home runs by Lampkin Jr., Needham and Callahan.
Hammergren threw well, only allowing one run on four hits while striking out six. Najeed-Bruch dominated in relief to earn the win. He did not allow a base runner in his four and a third innings.
GAME TWO: LCSC def. Corban 6-4
The run scoring started even earlier in game two for LC when Davis crushed the first pitch of the game over the fence for a 1-0 lead. His first-career home run stretched Davis hitting streak to seven games.
Lalo Porras got the ball in game two and struck out the side in order in the second. A diving play by Callahan at third got LC out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third.
Though he hadn't allowed a hit, Porras ran into trouble in the fourth and was lifted for
Matt Becker. After giving up a run, charged to Porras, the senior got LC out of a jam with a couple fly outs.
Needham erased a leadoff single with a double play on a line drive in the home half of the fifth. A strike out by Becker ended the inning.
Needham put the LC Warriors back in front with a shot off the scoreboard on the first pitch of the sixth.
Garvin began the seventh with a double down the right field line. He moved to third on a bunt single by
Jesus Duran before Phillips was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Garvin scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Davis to push the lead to 3-1.
Trainor singled in the eighth and stole second. He came around to score on an RBI double down the left field line by Way. Way stole third before Duran walked, then the two pulled off a double steal as LC took command of the contest at 5-1. Duran tallied the fifth stolen base of the inning with a swipe of third.
Becker retired the Corban Warriors in order in the bottom of the eighth.
Bart was hit by a pitch and stole second in the top of the ninth. He took third on a fly out before scoring on a wild pitch.
Joe Riley took over in the bottom of the ninth with LC in front 6-1. Corban took advantage of pitching mistakes to come within two at 6-4, but Riley struck out the side to end the game.
The Warriors took game two 6-4 to sweep the day.
Needham, Trainor and Garvin all day two hits in the game and Davis led LC with two RBI. His homerun on the first pitch extended his hit-streak to seven games.
Becker earned his second win of the season after tossing five inning of scoreless ball. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
The Warriors conclude the four-game set with Corban with a double header tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
