Baseball Bounces Back to Sweep Doubleheader Against Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho - The Lewis-Clark State baseball team bounced back well on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the College of Idaho Yotes. Behind strong starts from Gerald Hein and Lalo Porras, the Warriors' offense outscored the Yotes 13-2. LC now leads the series 2-1 heading into the final game tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT.

"Gerald kept C of I off balance all day and we scratched a couple runs to make it stick," coach Jake Taylor said. "Lalo pitched better and the defense was solid in game two. We finally strung a few at bats together and came up with a few two-out clutch hits."

GAME ONE: LCSC def. College of Idaho 4-1

Hein gave the Warriors a strong performance on the mound. Through his first three innings, he did not allow a hit and struck out five.

The Warriors put the first runs of the game on the board in the top of the fourth. Riley Way singled through the left side and stole second to begin the inning. Darren Trainor stayed hot at the plate with an RBI single to put LC up 1-0. Zach Needham stepped to the plate and lined an RBI double down the right field line to double the Warriors' lead.

Hein picked up two more strikeouts in the home half of the fourth. He wrapped up his day after eight innings to earn the win while striking out eight and allowing just one run four hits.

LC added on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. A.J.Davis doubled to lead off the inning and Needham did the same to bring him in. A Kody Garvin single scored Needham to give the Warriors a 4-1 advantage.

Tanner Simpson came in to close out the ninth and struck out the side to earn the save.

Needham led the Warriors at the plate with two hits, both doubles, and two RBI. Trainor and Garvin both collected one RBI each.

GAME TWO: LCSC def. College of Idaho 9-1

The Warriors wasted no time in the second game of the twin bill, striking for three runs in the top of the first. Davis and Trainor notched back-to-back singles and a double down the right field line by Needham knocked in the first run of the game. A Jacob Gribbin single knocked in two more to give LC an early 3-0 lead.

Jaden Phillips collected the first hit of his career with a double to deep left center in the top of the second, but was left stranded.

A single by Garvin in the top of the third sparked a two-out two-run rally. Gribbin reached on a walk to put two on for Thomas Lampkin who then doubled to deep right center to bring in two runs and put the Warriors up 5-0.

Porras struck out two in the home half of the third and then the side in the fourth to bring his total to eight through four innings.

Garvin reached on a ground-rule double and Gribbin was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth. Dalton Duarte took over on the bases for Gribbin and the pair pulled off a double steal to put both runners in scoring position. A ball put in play by Lampkin and a Yote defensive miscue brought in Garvin and Phillips collected his first collegiate RBI with a sacrifice fly to give LC a 7-0 cushion.

After the Warriors escaped a bases-loaded jam in the home half of the fifth, Davis and and Trainor earned free passes to put two on to start the sixth. A single by Garvin knocked in Davis before a sacrifice fly by Duarte put the Warriors up 9-0.

Greg Blackman took over for Porras in the sixth and picked off a runner at first before collecting a strikeout to end the inning. He sat the Yotes down in order in the seventh.

Jeremy Rabauliman took the mound in the bottom of the eighth and gave up one run on two hits before closing out the game in the ninth with LC in front 9-1.

Porras earned the win after not allowing a run in five innings and striking out eight.

Garvin led the offense with three hits and Gribbin had two RBI.

The Warriors collected nine hits in the game to sweep the doubleheader and improve to 3-4 in NAIA West play.

LC wraps up the series at the College of Idaho tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT. They return home to face Vanguard in the Guardian Series next weekend at Harris Field.
