NAMPA, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State baseball team totaled 13 hits on Tuesday in their 14-5 win over NCAA DII Northwest Nazarene. The Warriors homered four times, with Riley Way doing so twice in the contest. Kade Woods and Greg Blackman were solid in relief of Lalo Porras as the three combined to strike out 11.
"We had an all-around plus effort today," coach Jake Taylor said. "We had some big extra-base hits in big situations that allowed our pitching to settle in."
The Warriors answered a run in the first by the Nighthawks with back-to-back solo shots by Way and Zach Needham in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
NNU answered back with a solo shot of their own in their half of the second to even the game at two runs each. They tacked on the go-ahead run in the third to take a 3-2 advantage.
Darren Trainor for the top of the fourth started with a single to left center before taking second on a balk. Kyle Callahan evened the contest for LC with an RBI double off the wall in right center. Way kept the inning going with an infield single to put two on with no outs. Callahan took third on a fly out by Needham and came around to score on a bloop single up the middle by Kody Garvin. Way stole third, while Garvin was caught trying to take second, but Dalton Duarte and Jeff Bart both reached on free passes to load the bases.
Thomas Lampkin Jr. cleared the bases with a three-run, two-out double that narrowly missed leaving the ball park to grow the lead to 7-3.
The Nighthawks responded with two runs in the fourth to cut the LC lead to 7-5.
Way homered for the second time in the game in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 8-5. Woods made the bottom of the fifth quick, striking out two and retiring the side in order.
The Warriors' home run derby continued in the seventh with a solo shot by Lampkin Jr. A.J. Davis singled and stole second before Trainor drew a walk and Way was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch brought Davis across before another wild pitch brought in Trainor. With one out in the top of the seventh, LC led 11-5. Garvin brought in the Warrior's 12th run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
Woods added two more strikeouts to his day in a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.
Lampkin Jr. singled to get things going in the eighth with his third hit of the game. A stand-up double by Davis put runners on second and third. An RBI groundout by Trainor increased the cushion to 13-5.
Blackman took over on the mound in the eighth and collected two strikeouts in the quick three-up, three-down inning. A double play and a strikeout by Blackman closed out the game. The Warriors won 14-5.
Way and Lampkin Jr. led LC with three hits each and Lampkin Jr. had five RBI.
Davis' first hit of the game extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Woods had a strong outing in relief to earn the win, striking out six in 3.2 innings and did not walk a batter. Blackman struck out three in his two innings.
LC hosts Corban on Wednesday in their final home conference games of the season. The doubleheader is set for noon.
