SEATTLE – In their final non-conference game of the regular season, the Lewis-Clark State baseball team defeated NCAA Division I Seattle U 5-2. A three-run homer from Kyle Callahan was the deciding factor in the game that provided the Warriors with their 31st win of the season.
"Our pitching staff worked out of tough situations all game long and made pitches when they had to," coach Jake Taylor said. "Offensively we had a few guys square up some balls when the count was in their favor."
Darren Trainor got the game started in a big way with a solo shot to left to give the Warriors a quick 1-0 lead in the first.
The Redhawks responded quickly with a home run in the bottom half of the inning to tie things up at one. Tyler Burch settled in in the second with a 1-2-3 inning.
Thomas Lampkin Jr. got the Warriors' half of the third started with a hit-by-pitch before A.J. Davis singled through the left side. Callahan came up with a clutch three-run bomb to right to put LC in front 4-1.
The Warrior defense silenced a Seattle U threat in the fourth. Davis made a diving play, ranging to this right before sending a strong throw over to Callahan at first, and Burch recorded his fourth punch out of the game to end the inning.
Lalo Porras took over on the mound in the bottom of the fifth and struck out two, but the Redhawks added a run in the sixth to cut the LC lea to 4-2.
The Warriors answered back in the top of the seventh, starting with a leadoff single by Lampkin Jr. After taking second on a failed pick-off, Lampkin took third on a groundout and scored on a single up the middle by Trainor.
Andrew Najeeb-Brush came into the game in the seventh, and though two hits and a hit batter loaded the bases, Najeeb-Brush recorded two strikeouts before handing the ball over to Tanner Simpson. Simpson struck out a batter to end the inning and get LC out of a bases-loaded jam.
A 4-6-3 double play turned by Riley Way, Davis and Callahan put a stop to a Seattle U comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
Trainor led the Warriors with three hits and Callahan had three RBI. Kody Garvin tallied two hits in the contest and Lampkin Jr. scored two runs.
Burch allowed one run in four innings while striking out four. Porras struck out three in his two innings to earn the win. Simpson tossed the final two and a third to get the save.
The Warriors continue on to Oregon Tech for their final Cascade Conference series of the season. They will face the Owls starting Friday.
