KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Lewis-Clark State baseball team split its twin bill against Oregon Tech on Saturday with two high-scoring contests. The Warriors edged OIT 11-8 in game one before falling 12-10 after a late Owl charge in game two.
Kody Garvin knocked in seven over the two games.
"We came out a bit flat today, but we have to give credit to OIT as they came to play," coach
Jake Taylor said.
GAME ONE: LCSC def. Oregon Tech 11-8
The Owls and the Warriors traded runs through the first few innings on game one. After
Kyle Callahan drove in
A.J. Davis in the first, the Owls took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Garvin scored
Jesus Duran in the fourth to even the game 2-2.
The Owls battled back with two more in the home half of the fifth and sixth, with LC scoring once in the sixth on an error.
The Warriors busted things open in the seventh when they put up a seven spot. Trailing 3-6 heading into the inning, Garvin led things off with a solo shot to center.
Zach Needham and
Jacob Gribbin went back-to-back with hits to put two on, and Needham scored on a
Jeff Bart sacrifice fly. Gribbin advanced to third on a single by
Thomas Lampkin Jr. and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Davis.
Darren Trainor, Callahan,
Riley Way and Garvin kept the inning going with four-straight RBI doubles to give LC a 10-6 lead.
OIT scratched two across in the bottom of the seventh to come within two, but a Davis RBI single pushed the lead back to three at 11-8 in the eighth.
LC held their lead to take game one 11-8.
Davis, Trainor, Callahan and Garvin all had two hits in the game while Garvin led the Warriors with three RBI. Garvin homered in his second-straight game to give him six on the season.
Gerald Hein got the start for LC and went four and a third, striking out four.
Matt Driver tossed an inning and two thirds to earn the win.
Jesse Parker closed out the game to earn the save.
GAME TWO: OIT def. LCSC 12-10
Lampkin Jr. wasted no time getting the game started with a single and two stolen bases. Trainor gave LC a 1-0 lead with an RBI infield-single. OIT answered with a run in the home half of the inning, and LC regained the lead with a home run by Needham in the top of the second.
The Warriors answered an Owl run in the bottom of the inning with three of their own in the third. Trainor doubled before Callahan stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run shot over the center field wall to put LC on top 4-2.
Garvin kept the inning going with a two-out single and Needham drew a walk to put two on. Bart doubled to right center to grow the lead to 5-2. With the bases loaded for LC in the top of the fourth, Garvin doubled to bring in a pair and give the Warriors a 7-2 advantage. The Owls responded with three in the home half to cut the lead to 7-5.
Dalton Duarte doubled with two outs in the sixth before coming around to score on Garvin's second home run of the day, but OIT knotted things up 9-9 with a four-run bottom of the inning.
Oregon Tech's offense found a spark in the eighth, striking for three runs to take a 12-9 lead heading into the top of the ninth. Needham cranked his second home run of the game to open the top of the ninth for LC, but the comeback fell short and the Warriors dropped game two 12-10.
Trainor, Callahan and Garvin led LC in game two with three hits each. Garvin had four RBI to bring his total on the day to seven. Needham homered twice in the contest.
The Warriors wrap up the final series of the regular season tomorrow at 11 a.m.
