LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State baseball team pulled off their second walk-off win of the weekend on Saturday with a 6-5 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds. The Warriors battled through the rain, and with the help of a dominant relief performance by
Matt Becker, LC was able to fight their way back into the game and come away with their 11
th-straight conference win.
"I think the main momentum shift came when
Matt Becker came in and started throwing up zeros for us out of the bullpen," coach
Jake Taylor said. "He did a great job, and then Joe (Riley) at the end came in and got three quick outs. We caught fire a little late in the ballgame."
The Thunderbirds controlled the game for the first five innings with a three-run first and a two-run fifth.
A five-run inning evened the score in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a lead-off double by
Thomas Lampkin Jr.
A.J. Davis drew a walk.
Darren Trainor put the Warriors on the board with a walk-banging double to right center that knocked in Lampkin Jr. and put Davis at third.
Kody Garvin drew a walk to load the bases and
Riley Way dropped a blooper into shallow left to bring in two to cut the deficit to 5-3.
A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, and another wild pitch and an error brought in both base runners to tie the game at five each.
Becker, who had taken over in the sixth, retired the side in order in the top of the seventh. He struck out the side in the eighth and held UBC hitless through his three and two thirds innings.
Joe Riley took over on the mound in the top of the ninth in the 5-5 ball game and held the Thunderbirds off the board to send the game into the bottom of the ninth.
A Lampkin Jr. double to left got the ball rolling before walks to Trainor and Garvin loaded the bases. Way stepped to the plate and launched a sacrifice fly to left to give LC their 11
th-straight conference win.
The walk-off win is the sixth this season by the Warriors, tying the program record set in 2006 and 2010.
Lampkin Jr. and Trainor both notched a pair of hits in the game and Way had two RBI.
Becker was solid in his outing and did not allow a hit while striking out five in three and a third.
Gerald Hein got the start for LC and tossed four and third while recording eight punch outs. Riley got the win, his second of the season.
The Warriors wrap up the season series with UBC tomorrow at Harris Field starting at 11 a.m.
