Superb Start by Sellers Leads to Series-Opening Win at EOU

LA GRANDE, Ore. Trent Sellers put together another commanding performance on the mound to help the No. 4 LC State Baseball shut out Eastern Oregon 7-0 to open the Cascade Conference series. The junior followed up his 14-strikeout performance last week with 10 punchouts in eight innings on Friday.

"Once again, Trent Sellers was exceptional in his outing," Head Coach Jake Taylor said. "Offensively, we began slowly until the fifth when A.J. (Davis) gave us a great at-bat that woke us up a bit."

Sellers fanned five through his first three innings on the mound for LC State, carrying the momentum over from his previous start.

The Warriors scored the first runs of the game in the fourth after an error put Zach Threlfall on base. He took second on a passed ball before a single by Sam Linscott plated the run.

A pair of two-run blasts added to the LC advantage in the sixth. Threlfall doubled down the left field line to put a runner on before Nagle made it a 3-0 ball game. Luke White singled with two outs, and Justin Mazzone drove a ball over the wall in right center to send the Warriors into the home half of the sixth with a five-run lead.

Sellers' strikeout total grew to nine through seven innings, and LC added insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Luke White walked and Mazzone doubled off the wall in dead center, and a sacrifice fly by Matt James brought in White. A wild pitch plated courtesy runner Joe Canty to make it 7-0.

Jantzen Lucas came out of the bullpen in the ninth and struck out two to complete the shutout.

Sellers wrapped up his day with 10 strikeouts in eight innings. He allowed only three hits and did not walk a batter for the second straight game. In his last 17 innings, he has given up just four hits, no walks and no runs.

Mazzone led the offense with two hits, and both Mazzone and Nagle knocked in two with their two-run home runs.

The series at Eastern Oregon continues on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled at noon. The contest may start sooner to avoid weather, so stay tuned to social media for updates.
