LEWISTON, Idaho – The top-seeded LC State Baseball team scored five runs in the first two innings to jump in front of fourth-seeded Corban University in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Baseball Championship, presented by U.S. Bank, on Monday. The hosting Warriors saw strong pitching from
Trent Sellers and solid work out of the bullpen to edge the visiting Warriors 5-3.
LC State, now 49-4 on the season, will take on third-seeded UBC on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Harris Field.
Riley Way got things going with a leadoff double to right center then scored on a base hit up the middle by
Aidan Nagle. LC added on in the second after
Nick Seamons reached on an error and walks to
Pu'ukani De Sa and Way loaded the bases. Nagle walked to bring one in before
Sam Linscott cleared the base paths with a three-RBI knock to right center.
Sellers worked a 1-2-3 third and fourth, featuring three strikeouts, and fanned two more to end the top of the fifth.
Corban put a run on the board in the sixth after an unlucky hop off the bag at second. Three hits in the inning cut the LC State lead to 5-1, but Sellers' ninth strikeout of the game got the hosting Warriors out of a bases-loaded jam.
LC handed the ball to
Cameron Smith in the seventh and faced the minimum. Corban added two in the eighth and threatened in the ninth, but
Greg Blackman came out of the bullpen and retired three straight batters to end the game and earn the save.
Nagle led LC State with two hits, while Linscott knocked in three. Nagle drove in the other two LC runs. Sellers picked up his 11
th win of the season after striking out nine in six innings and giving up just one run.
