LEWISTON, Idaho – No. 2 Warrior Baseball wrapped up its four-game non-conference sweep of Eastern Oregon on Sunday by scoring early and often. LC State put together a pair of strong all-around games with competitive performances on the mound and at the plate.
With the wins, LC State is 15-3 on the season.
"Always nice to sweep at home," Head Coach
Jake Taylor said. "We had a bit better energy and competitiveness today. It showed up on the mound and at the plate. Good finish to the weekend."
GAME ONE: No. 2 LC State def. Eastern Oregon 14-1 (7 INN.)
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first.
Isaiah Thomas was hit by a pitch and
Pu'ukani De Sa doubled before a sacrifice fly by
Sam Olsson brought in the game's first run.
Dominic Signorelli launched a two-run shot to push the advantage to 3-0.
EOU scored one run on two hits in the top of the second before a strikeout by starter
Greg Blackman ended the frame. Blackman struck out two more in the third and a sliding catch by
Nick Seamons in left sent LC back to the plate.
Olsson singled up the middle to start the home half of the third and courtesy runner
Alex Sol moved to third on a double by Signorelli. A wild pitch brought Sol across and Signorelli scored on an RBI groundout by
Jakob Marquez. LC led 5-1 through three innings.
Blackman struck out the side in the fourth and the Warriors put up a six spot in the bottom of the inning. An error put Seamons on to start the frame, Thomas tallied a single and De Sa walked to load the bases. Olsson and Signorelli drew back-to-back walks to bring in two before a single by
Carter Booth added another.
Eric Mast kept the inning going with a two-RBI single and a fielder's choice forced by
Isaac Haws gave LC an 11-1 advantage.
The Warriors scored a pair on five straight free passes to Thomas,
Charlie Tentinger, Olsson,
Evan Overmars and
Alex Sol.
Kai Pagan hit into a fielder's choice to push the margin to 14-1 in the fifth.
Alec Holmes,
Jace Taylor and
Jake Green combined for a scoreless final three innings. Blackman earned the win with seven strikeouts in four innings.
Signorelli led LC with two hits and three RBI in the contest.
GAME TWO: No. 2 LC State def. Eastern Oregon 10-2
LC State struck for four runs in both the first and second innings to take control early.
Booth opened up game two with a base hit, and walks to Thomas and Olsson loaded the bases with one out. Signorelli stayed hot at the plate with a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly by
Jack Sheward made it 3-0.
Joe Canty stepped to the plate next and drove an RBI-double off the wall in left center
Starter
Dallas McGill picked up a pair of strikeouts in the second, and the Warrior offense continued to dominate in the home half of the inning. Haws legged out an infield single and went all the way to third on a throwing error. A groundout by Booth knocked in Haws, and Thomas kept the momentum going with a double to left center.
EOU pitching struggled with two straight walks to Olsson and Signorelli to put a runner at every base before Sheward brought all three in on a single and Mountie error. LC led 8-0 after two innings.
McGill sat EOU down in order in the third before handing the ball over to
Drake George in the fourth. A double play got LC out of the inning with the minimum faced.
Thomas and De Sa tallied back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Olsson drove in the Warriors' ninth run with a groundout.
Cole Wilkinson came out of the bullpen in the fifth and struck out the side in a 1-2-3 frame. EOU scored a pair in the sixth off reliever
Bryson Spagnuolo.
Cameron Smith needed just six pitches to retired the Mountaineers in the seventh. He earned the win after shutting out EOU in the eighth and ninth.
Booth added one more run for LC State with a solo shot to dead center in the eighth.
Smith struck out five in his outing, McGill fanned four, Wilkinson struck out three and Spagnuolo had two punchouts for a total of 14 by the Warrior staff. LC State walked only one batter between the two games.
Booth, Thomas, De Sa and Sheward each had two hits in the game and Sheward drove in three runs.
UP NEXT
The Warriors host Corban March 18-19 to open Cascade Conference play. The series is scheduled for a pair of doubleheaders.
