WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The No. 7 Warrior women (13-2, 9-1) came away with two key victories over the weekend with commanding wins over No. 20 Southern Oregon and previously undefeated Oregon Tech. The pair of wins has LC State at the top of the Cascade Conference standings with a half-game lead over OIT. Callie Stevens was voted the CCC Player of the Week after averaging 21 points through the two games. The Warriors are on the road for the remainder of January, starting with contests against Warner Pacific (6-8, 4-6) and Multnomah (5-11, 2-8).
LC State is 11-0 against the Knights dating back to 2005 and defeated WPU 70-52 last season in Portland. Ellie Sander led the contest with 20 points and four steals while Maddie Holm grabbed 16 rebounds. The 79-35 win in Lewiston saw Stevens score 22 points. WPU got off to a strong start in CCC play with wins over Multnomah, Bushnell and Corban but have lost six of the last seven.
“Warner Pacific is an improved team from last season and have some quick and athletic players,” Head Coach Caelyn Orlandi said. “They have battled in multiple games this season and are tough defensively. Winning on the road is a challenge and we will need to come in focused, poised, and mentally tough. I love the direction our team is headed right now and we will keep focusing on improving every day and doing so together.”
The Warriors are 6-0 against Multnomah since 2015 and put up big numbers last season. LC defeated the Lions in Portland last season 69-46 behind nine steals by Sitara Byrd. LC tallied 19 as a team in the contest. In Lewiston, the Warriors came away with an 89-58 victory with another 14 steals and 12 Warrior 3-pointers. The Lions lead the CCC in free throw percentage (.786), 3-point field goal percentage defense (.267) and 3-pointers made per game (8.6). Multnomah’s Savannah Huerta leads the conference in scoring average (20.8) and 3-pointers made per game (3.3) and is second in free throw percentage (.909). Mia Martineau leads in 3-point percentage (.420).
“Individually, Multnomah has players that lead the conference in a few different categories,” Orlandi said. "Savannah Huerta leads the league in scoring and 3-pointers made per game and her teammate, Mia, leads the league in 3-point percentage. Playing a zone defense, we will need to make sure we are focused and ready to defend the 3-point line.
LC State leads the conference in field goal percentage (.450), 3-point percentage (.330), steals per game (11.6), turnover margin (3.87) and assist/turnover ratio (1.3). Sander is second in the conference in field goal percentage (.529), second in 3-point field goal percentage (.414) and third in assists per game (3.8). Stevens is third in 3-point percentage (.388) and 3-pointers made per contest (2.7). Darian Herring is third in blocked shots per game (1.9) and second in total blocked shots (28).
