Warriors Win Blocking Battle, Drop Match to No. 3 Eastern Oregon

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Lewis-Clark State College Volleyball out-blocked the top blocking team in the Cascade Conference on Friday, but ultimately fell to No. 3 Eastern Oregon in three sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-15) in La Grande.
 
The Warriors had some highlights with strong nights at the net from Missy Mortensen and Hallie Seaman, and a career-high 10 kills by Taylin Rowley. Juliauna Forgach Aguilar tied for the match-high with 12 kills.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kills by Forgach Aguilar got the offense going for the Warriors in the first set. LC State had three blocks in the first frame with contributions from Seaman, Karissa Lindner, Mortensen and Rowley, but Eastern Oregon had the momentum to pull ahead quickly and take the set 25-16.
 
LC State struck first in the second set on three straight EOU errors. A kill by Lindner put the Warriors up 4-1 and a swing by Forgach Aguilar made it 6-2. LC kept the pressure on with kills by Rowley and block by Seaman and Mortensen for a 9-5 advantage, but a run by the Mountaineers put EOU in front 10-9. Forgach Aguilar tallied a kill before assisting on a block with Lindner to give LC a 12-11 edge, but Eastern Oregon responded again to take a 15-12 lead. Kills by Forgach Aguilar and Rowley, along with a block by Mortensen and Seaman, brought the Warriors within one, 16-15, but EOU surged again to pull ahead 20-15. Kills by Anna Merrill and Forgach Aguilar kept LC in the set, but the Mounties closed it out 25-21.
 
After a pair of kills by Mortensen and Forgach Aguilar started the third frame, Eastern Oregon took control with a 16-4 run. Rowley added a pair of kills at 18-8, and Forgach Aguilar and Teagan Scott added to the LC State total before EOU took the set 25-15 to end the match.
 
STAT RECAP
Forgach Aguilar tied for the match-high with 12 kills and Rowley notched a career-high with 10. Esther Kailiponi dished a team-best 13 assists and Scott added 12.
 
Mortensen led the contest with five blocks assists and Seaman assisted on four. Lindner total three blocks with two assists and a solo. Natany Felix Guimaraes collected a match-high 17 digs while Hannah Dotson and Kailiponi each had nine.
 
UP NEXT
LC State Volleyball wraps up the regular-season road schedule on Saturday with a contest at No. 23 College of Idaho. First serve is set for 3 p.m. in Caldwell.
