WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The No. 13 Warrior Women’s Basketball team is off to its best start since 2016-17 with a 10-0 record under second-year coach Caelyn Orlandi. LC State will takes its perfect record into the final two games of 2024 with Cascade Conference matchups against Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho in the P1FCU Activity Center this weekend.
LC State (10-0, 4-0) opens the weekend on Friday against the EOU Mountaineers (4-4, 0-3) and will host its annual Toy-for-Tots toy drive in conjunction with major sponsor McVey Entertainment Group. The first 100 fans to bring a new, unwrapped toy will receive free admission and a t-shirt.
The Warriors are 9-6 against EOU since 2006 and won both meetings last season. In last year’s win in Lewiston, Ellie Sander scored 12 points with four steals and three assists, while Sitara Byrd and Darian Herring led the defensive efforts with seven rebounds each. Reigning CCC Defensive Player of the Year Brie Holecek led the Mounties with 17 points.
EOU leads the Cascade in free throw percentage (.786) and is second in 3-pointers made per game (8.1). Holecek is the top free throw shooter with a .917 clip
LC State is 18-0 against the Yotes (3-5, 1-2) dating back to 2007 and last faced C of I at home in last year’s CCC tournament where it defeated the in-state rival 78-57. Sander scored 19 points with seven boards and four assists. Rogers Toyota is the game sponsor for Saturday’s 2024 finale.
C of I is second in the CCC in rebounding defense (35.5) and Anna Mooney is second in free throw percentage (.864).
The Warriors lead the conference in scoring defense (50.7 points per game allowed), scoring margin (25.7), field goal percentage (.486), field goal percentage defense (.344), rebounding defense (32.6), blocked shots per game (4.9), assists per game (18.9), steals per game (14.6), turnover margin (9.30) and assist/turnover ratio (1.3). LC State ranks second in the NAIA scoring defense, third in field goal percentage, fifth in blocks per game and 11th in assists per game.
Individually, Herring is second in the CCC in field goal percentage (.545), Sander is fourth (.525) and Byrd is fifth (.511). Herring leads the conference in assists per game (4.4), blocks per game (3.3) and total blocks (33). Sander is second in steals per game (3.2) and Byrd is fifth (2.7). Herring ranks second in the NAIA in blocks per game
