Warrior Weekly Preview - April 8-14, 2024

TRACK & FIELD

Warrior Track and Field is in action in a pair of meets this weekend with athletes at both the Whitworth Twilight and NNU Invitational. LC State earned four national-qualifying marks at the Whitworth Peace Meet with Madigan Kelly in the 100m hurdles, Sydnie Zywina in the triple jump, London Kirk in the 400m as well as with the men’s 4x100m relay.

“Looking forward to what is supposed to be good weather this week at Whitworth,” Head Coach Mike Collins said. “Our sprints and jumps crews have been doing well despite the colder than desired temperatures for these types of athletes, so a warm day will be nice. Competition won’t be as strong this week, but we hope to see some good performances, nonetheless.  Hoping to see a couple more relays hit marks this week, but competition is often pretty critical to get those extra seconds or tenths of a second out of each runner.”

Action in Spokane is set for Thursday at Whitworth before a group heads to Nampa for the meet at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.

“NNU’s meet will not be anything like Thursday if the forecast is correct with highs only in the 50s,” Collins said. “Not everyone is traveling to this meet, so we will see how it goes as many are wanting to prepare for the following week with a meet close to home (WSU) where family and friends can see them compete.”

BASEBALL

The Warriors welcome No. 2 LSU Shreveport to Lewiston for a four-games non-conference series starting on Friday. The meeting will be the first at Harris Field during the regular season between the two top-10 programs. LC State (23-9) is coming off a four-game sweep of College of Idaho while LSUS (32-3) has won nine straight.

“Exciting week with LSUS coming to town,” Head Coach Jake Taylor said. “It’s going to be a great series and we’re looking forward to hosting them.”

The weekend is sponsored by P1FCU. A limited amount of LC State Baseball cards will be handed out on Friday and fans will also be entered to win a 2024 Avista NAIA World Series souvenir shirt. Saturday is Heroes Day and Alumni Day, and LC State will host BBQ and Baseball. Fans can purchase a family pass ticket bundle that includes four tickets and four BBQ meals for $80 ($136 value). The Warriors will sign posters after the games. Those that donate to Wednesday’s Wake Up with the Warriors event will receive free entry to Sunday’s game.

Warrior Baseball holds a 3-1 record against the Pilots with three of the four meetings coming in the Avista NAIA World Series. LC State last faced LSUS in the 2023 East/West Challenge where the Warriors came away with a 6-0 win to start the season. Nick Seamons tallied a home run and a triple with three RBI in the contest.

Josh Gibson leads the Pilots in batting average so far this season at .384 and Angel Rodriguez has six home runs. Vantrel Reed has driven in 33 runs. LSUS is active on the bases with 87 stolen bags. Isaac Rohde has thrown the most innings (69.1) and holds a 1.43 ERA. The Pilots enter the weekend with a team ERA of 2.86 and team batting average of .322.

The Warriors currently lead the Cascade Conference in slugging percentage (.499), walks (166), hit batters (72) and ERA (4.71). Jack Sheward is the top player in the conference in on-base percentage (.507), Carter Booth leads in doubles (18) and Dominic Signorelli leads in home runs (12). On the mound, Shane Spencer is at the top of the CCC in opposing batting average (.194). Seamons leads the team in batting average (.358) and Signorelli is slugging .748 with 40 RBI.

TENNIS

The Warrior women head to Spokane on Saturday to take on Whitworth for their third straight NCAA Division III matchup. LC State faced the Pirates once this season and came away with a 6-1 victory at home. The men’s team also heads to Whitworth to face the Pirates before traveling to Walla Walla on Sunday to face Whitman.

Warrior Women’s Tennis is 23-1 against Whitworth dating back to 2010. LC has won the last seven meetings. The Warriors have just two counting matches remaining on the schedule ahead of the Red River Conference Tournament including Saturday’s matchup.

The LC State men take on Whitworth and Whitman after a 5-2 victory over fellow DIII opponent Pacific on March 31. The Warriors are 27-1 against Whitworth since 2010 and took the meeting earlier this season 4-3. LC has faced Whitman three times already this season with wins of 6-1, 8-1 and 5-2. The Warriors hold a 16-12 record against the Blues dating back to 2010. The two matches are the final contests for the men in the regular season ahead of the NAIA Unaffiliated Group Tournament in New Orleans.

“Whitworth can be a tricky place to play as the environmental conditions of the three courts in its bubble produces ball speeds equivalent of high altitude,” Head Coach Kai Fong said. “We will be preparing for those conditions. Overcoming those challenges will be vital to our growth. The men will travel to play Whitman for the fourth time this season. An outdoor match would be ideal. These will be good lead-ups to the postseason tournament next week in New Orleans for the men.”
