Warrior Weekly Preview - Jan.20-26, 2025

TRACK & FIELD

Warrior Track and Field kicks off the main portion of its indoor season this weekend at the two-day Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open hosted by the University of Idaho. The action starts on Friday in Moscow and will wrap up on Saturday. 

Sydnie Zywina punched her provisional ticket to nationals in December at the Spokane Invitational with a mark of 11.63m. The distance ranks ninth in the NAIA this season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

LC State Women’s Tennis opens the spring segment of its schedule this weekend with a pair of matches in Boise. The Warriors will face NCAA Division I schools Boise State and Idaho State after splitting its series with Alberta in the fall.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The second half of Cascade Conference play starts this weekend when No. 19 LC State Women’s Basketball (14-4, 8-4) hosts Evergreen State (Wash.) (3-10, 3-8) and Northwest (Wash.) (4-13, 3-8). The Warriors are tied for third place in the CCC with Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho. 

ICCU is the sponsor of the Warrior Basketball games this weekend. LC State will host a food drive on Friday benefitting the Warrior Pantry. Those that bring in two or more non-perishable food items will receive a voucher for free popcorn at concessions. 

Evergreen State challenged LC State in the meeting in Olympia earlier this season. The Geoducks, who the Warriors hold an 8-0 record against since 2006, led until late in the game. LC State outscored TESC 21-8 in the final 10 minutes to earn a 55-46 victory. Sitara Byrd led the comeback efforts with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Darian Herring added 10 points with four blocks and four steals. Evergreen’s Sydney VanNess led the contest with 24 points and Jalyn Sackrider grabbed 11 rebounds. 

The Geoducks are third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.300) and second in blocked shots per game (4.5). Sackrider is second in rebounding (10.4) and leads in blocks per game (3.6). She has 47 blocks total in 13 games.

LC State is 10-3 against Northwest dating back to 2003 and defeated the Eagles 97-47 to start CCC play this season. Herring led the contest with 16 points and three blocks and Payton Hymas added 11 points. LC State totaled 21 steals in the contest with six from Byrd, five by Hymas and four by Ellie Sander. Kimberly Carrada San led NU with 13 points and Ellie De Waard grabbed eight rebounds. 

Carrada San is fourth in the Cascade in scoring (14.4).

LC State leads the CCC in blocked shots per game (4.9), steals per game (13.4) and turnover margin (7.72). The Warriors are second in the conference in scoring defense (56.7), scoring margin (18.9), field goal percentage (.481), assists per game (17.7)

Individually, Herring leads the conference in blocks (52). Sander is fifth in scoring (13.9) and second in steals per game (2.9) and Byrd in third in steals per game(2.7). Green is second in field goal percentage (.582), Herring is fourth (.555) and Sander is sixth (.539).

MEN'S BASKETBALL

No. 21 LC State Men’s Basketball (13-5, 8-4) opens the second half of the Cascade Conference season this weekend at home against Evergreen State (Wash.) (1-13, 1-10) and Northwest (Wash.) (2-15, 1-10). The Warriors are tied for fourth in the CCC with Eastern Oregon heading into the week.

LC State is 16-6 against TESC since 2022 and defeated the Geoducks 69-53 in December. Alton Hamilton scored a game-high 26 points with seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals and John Lustig and Grayson Hunt each tallied 10 points. Graham Bradley led Evergreen in scoring with 14 points and Solomon Campbell grabbed 12 rebounds. 

Evergreen State leads the CCC in free throw percentage (.759). Jourdan Joseph is second individually at .895. Campbell is tied for third in blocks per game (1.0).

The Warriors are 6-2 against Northwest since 2002 and beat the Eagles 71-63 in Kirkland earlier this season. Hamilton posted a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double and MaCarhy Morris dropped 20 points. Northwest’s Nash Wobrock led the contest with 25 points. 

LC State is third in the Cascade free throw percentage (.729), field goal percentage (.486), field goal percentage defense (.430) and blocked shots per game (3.4). Hamilton leads the conference in rebounding (9.7) and is second in scoring (17.1) and blocked shots per game (1.1). Morris is fifth in scoring (15.1).
