Warriors Cruise Past Bismarck State Behind Cordle’s Double-Double, Herring Surpasses 1,000 Points

NEW TOWN, N.D. – The LC State Women's Basketball team turned in a dominant performance on Friday at the 4 Bears Casino and Lodge Classic with a 92-66 victory over host Bismarck State (N.D.). Freshman Kaylee Cordle notched the first double-double of her career, while senior Darian Herring surpassed 1,000 points in her career in the contest.

Cordle finished the contest with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Herring's 15 points have her at 1,001 in her career.

The victory, which was fueled by a 22-8 second quarter, improves the LC State record to 2-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter was an even battle with one point separating the two teams after 10 minutes. Tatum Brager opened the contest with a 3 and Cordle made it a quick 5-0 lead in the first minute. The contest was tied 11-11 with 2:52 left in the frame before a basket by Herring and two triples by Brager gave the Warriors a 19-14 edge. Bismarck State cut the difference to 19-18 at the end of the quarter.

The Warriors blew the game open in the second quarter after a 3 by Kendall Wallace got the offense rolling. She added another 3-pointer before Kiana Skogstad found the basket, and a jumper by Wallace made it 28-20 at 5:00. Wallace drained her third and fourth triples of the frame in the span of a minute to push the lead to 37-24 by 2:14. Cordle and Keira O'Neill closed out the scoring in the half and grew the LC State advantage to 41-26 at the break.

Herring sparked an eight-point run for the Warriors to start the second half, fueled by tallies from Cordle and Grace Beardin. A 3 by Brager started a 13-point rally that saw the Warrior lead grow to 68-35 with 1:08 left in the frame, and five straight points by Cordle ended the third quarter with LC State in front 73-38.

The Mystics controlled the final 10 minutes, but the Warrior lead held through the frame. Herring joined the 1,000-Point Club with a pair of free throws early in the quarter, and Ellee Brockman, Cordle, Lucy Teegarden and Hali Anderson scored before the game ended.

STAT RECAP
Cordle led the contest in points (22), rebounds (10) and assists (4) for her first double-double. She was 7-for-14 from the floor and 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Wallace added 16 points, all in the second quarter, with four 3-pointers.

Herring made her mark on LC State Women's Basketball with 15 points to push her over the 1,000-point total for her career. She grabbed seven rebounds as well.

Brager also tallied 15 points with five 3-pointers on nine attempts, and Teegarden scored a career-best seven points. Beardin grabbed three steals in the first five minutes of the game.

"Tremendous effort by our team today," coach Caelyn Orlandi said. "Grace Beardin started the game off extremely well with her three steals. She gave us fantastic energy. Kendall and Tatum were phenomenal shooters today and balanced each other so well. Kaylee Cordle stuffed the stat sheet and is a true competitor.

"A big congratulations to Darian on her new membership into the 1,000-Point Club," Orlandi added. "I'm so proud of all of her achievements. She's off to a great start in her senior season. Every one of our team members off the bench did a tremendous job and positively contributed."

Every Warrior in the game grabbed at least one rebound and all but one scored at least two points. LC State shot 47.8% from the field.
