ASHLAND, Ore. – Despite strong performances on both sides of the ball, No. 12 LC State suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 18 Southern Oregon. The Warriors won the first two sets before the Raiders rallied for a reverse sweep by scores of 18-25, 24-26, 25-20, 30-28, 16-14.
Addison Wilson was stellar at the net with a career-high seven blocks, while
Mikale Roy and
Taylor Boyce led the offensive attack with 18 kills each. Both Warrior setters had double-doubles.
The loss has the LC State record at 6-1 on the season and 0-1 to start Cascade Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors opened the match on a 6-0 run with two aces by
Teagan Scott and kills from
Hadyn Smith and
Karissa Lindner. Swings by Boyce, Roy and Wilson and a block by Wilson and Smith had the lead at 11-3.
Jordynn Albright and
Sammi Humphrey added kills and
Hannah Dotson dealt an ace to make it 16-6 as LC State maintained a commanding lead. SOU rallied to cut the difference to 22-16 late in the frame, but a kill by Albright and block by Lindner and Smith ended the set 25-18.
Lindner started the second frame with a kill before a pair of swings each by Smith and Roy had things tied up 5-5. Humphrey dealt an ace before an assist on a kill by Albright to give LC State a 7-5 edge, then a three-point run with tallies from Albright, Boyce and Dotson made it 11-8. Boyce added three kills in a short span and Roy notched two as the Warriors continued to build their lead. Another ace by Dotson and two more kills by Boyce had the difference at 21-14. The Raiders rallied once more to cut the margin to 22-20 before tying things up 24-24. Roy tallied a kill before an SOU error gave the Warriors a 26-24 set win.
The Raiders had the momentum to start set three and pulled ahead to a 4-1 advantage. Smith and Roy cut the margin to 6-5 with kills and a block by Lindner and Smith kept the score within two, 11-9. The two teams traded points as the set continued and Southern Oregon edged the Warriors 25-20.
Kills by Roy and Boyce got LC State started in the fourth set, but runs by the Raiders had SOU in front 11-7. Kills by Boyce and Smith along with a block by Wilson and Boyce and an ace by Humphrey had the Warriors ahead 16-15, and swings by
Alba Carpena and Smith had the score knotted 20-20.
Ella Stosich dealt an ace as kills by Boyce for a 25-24 edge, but the Raiders battled back to take the long set 30-28.
Lindner, Boyce, Wilson and Roy gave LC State a 5-3 lead in the deciding set, and kills by Lindner and Albright had the lead at 8-5. SOU answered the tie the score 8-8, but Roy, Smith and Humphrey answered for a 13-11 edge. The Raiders rallied for a run of four straight points to end the set 16-14.
STAT RECAP
Roy and Boyce tied for the match-high with 18 kills each and Smith added 13. Scott led the contest with 33 assists and Humphrey dished out a career-best 23.
Wilson was stellar at the net with seven blocks, Boyce added five while Lindner and Smith had four each. Stosich led the back row with 17 digs, Scott collected 14 for a double-double and Humphrey also had double digits with 10.
Humphrey and Dotson each dealt three service aces.
LC State led the contest in all categories outside of hitting percentage. The Warriors dealt 10 aces and put up 11 blocks but tallied 31 attack errors for a .210 mark compared to SOU's .234 clip.
