LEWISTON, Idaho – There were quite a few familiar faces on the court for Lewis-Clark State College coach
Brandon Rinta when his Warriors took on the Spokane Club in a men's basketball exhibition game Saturday night at the Activity Center.
And it wasn't only the players on the Warrior roster that he knew. He was playing at Central Washington at the same time Casey Calvary was a star at Gonzaga. He was a coach at Eastern Washington when Danny Pariseau and Ryan Bailey were playing for the Eagles, and Stephen Madison was playing at Idaho.
So, he had first-hand knowledge of the talent that awaited the Warriors, who overcome an uninspired first half to win 92-84. Just having the opportunity for his team to break up a 17-day span without a competition was good in the eyes of Rinta.
"It was a good game for us to have," he said. "I knew who most of those guys were and that they could still play. To find a team like this, we couldn't ask for more."
The Warriors' ability to adapt was impressive in that there weren't the usual pre-game film exchanges and analysis.
"We didn't come out with the energy that I was hoping that we would," Rinta said. "It took us 20 minutes to start playing like we're capable and with the energy we're capable."
For the fans, Calvary – at 38 years old, counted an exciting two-handed dunk among his 28 points and 11 rebounds.
